I think filmmakers in Nigeria need to hire a 'hater' in production.

I see so many films and series that could easily move from middling to really good or even great if there was an unbiased person to ask important questions like, "Does this scene/character/plot make sense?"

YES! Hold onto the grace you were given at the beginning. It mattered. It got you here. Just stop reaching for it as a shield years after you needed the armor.

And, NO! You won’t always be allowed to write badly. That advice will not always be applicable to you, on your writing journey, in the long run. Time would require that you’ve learnt, improved, practiced, built capacity and depth, and above all, time, would ask that you show proof of these.

And the harsh truth is: you won’t always be allowed to write badly.

One advice that you’ve heard—it probably kickstarted your writing journey—is that you are allowed to write badly. While that advice is true, I want you to also know that it was meant to be a door you walk through, on your way to somewhere better. Not a door you mistake for the destination. It is not. Because, what was grace for a beginner becomes an excuse for someone who has had enough time to know better, but chose comfort instead.

You will not always be forgiven for writing badly. Not by editors, not by readers who have a thousand other things competing for their attention and no obligation to be patient with you, not by an industry that rewards craft, that has been sharpened over years. At some point, the same weak sentence that once got a gentle, and supportive “keep going” starts getting silence instead.

And that silence is not the industry being cruel to you. It’s the industry, without malice, and with good intentions, expecting you to have grown.
