The only type of obedience that we are capable of is an obedience that has been given to us freely, as gift, by the Holy Spirit. That's the obedience of faith.

@cjohnsonn0311 An ever bigger tragedy is that many in the church believe that their holiness is something that we work towards. Instead of the free gift of holiness in the person of Christ Jesus.
Our holiness is never dependent on what we do or don't do.

Because we remain sinners all throughout our lives. Yet as we are declared to be sinless in Christ. In our Baptism we are crucified & buried w Jesus..and then raised anew in Christ.

We are 100% sinner..while being 100% holy & righteous in Christ. Simultaneously.
The Catholic Church hated this scriptural & theological truth when Luther proffered it and 98% of Christians today (of all stripes) still despise the idea.

Luther called these types and the Roman Catholic clergy "Two wolves tied at the tail."
Outwardly they can't stand each other but basically they hold to the same 'Christ + some of your sincere effort'.

@wendelltalks I don't like it when preachers talk about good works as a necessity because then the already tainted motives of a self serving self promoting sinner become even more self focused. Better to just forget about the self altogether where God is concerned.

What he more than likely means is that it's hard to get certain sinners to play the phony baloney game of pretending to live a holy life, the self sanctification/obedience game. Which he advocates.

Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. The Bible says so.
Could you imagine being a Calvinist and telling someone, "Well..it's possible that Jesus loves you. Maybe, just maybe..Jesus has forgiven your sin."
