A trashy zombie-revenge movie featuring Adam West and Tia Carrere, and with Motörhead Playing Ace Of Spades over the opening credits? Yes please. It’s fun and although the gore is minimal, it’s just enough, for the era, to get this on the list

Night Feeder - 1988
An SOV from the seedy underbelly of the San Francisco punk scene. something/someone is sucking peoples brains out through their eye sockets. A surprisingly effective low budget horror with a well done autopsy scene.

Bloody New Year - 1987
Very weird mixture of The Shining (1980), Night Of The Demons (1988) & Dead & Buried (1981). An American-styled, 50s-themed British horror that makes absolutely no sense and is total unpredictable nonsense, in a good way

Evil Dead 2 - 1987
Considered both a remake and a sequel (or a requel) to The Evil Dead (1981) but a classic in its own right. One of the few movies to successfully mix slapstick humour with genuine scares, it goes without saying it’s a must watch

Scalps - 1987
This violent spaghetti western from Bruno Mattei may have been a late entry in the genre but is deserving of more recognition. Not to be confused with the movie of the same name from 1983 by Fred Olen Ray.

An American Werewolf In London - 1981
Not much can be said about this that hasn’t already been said, it’s an absolute classic with one of the best transformations in cinema history. Needless to say, it’s highly recommended.

Sweet home - 1989
This Japanese haunted house movie was made in conjunction with a role-playing video game of the same name which was the main inspiration for Resident Evil (1996). It has some spooky scenes and some great practical effects, recommended.

Night Of The Demon - 1980
Another video nasty that didn’t really deserve its inclusion. It’s not a “good” film but it is highly entertaining (in a bad way) and the ending is like The Incredible Hulk TV series if it was made by Troma.

Don’t go in the woods - 1981
Surprisingly well shot but atrociously dubbed, this video nasty falls into the so bad it’s good category. Plenty of decent kills & a good pace (along with the unintentional humour) make this a recommended watch.

Maniac - 1980
Joe Spinell is superb as the sweaty, heavy-breathing mother-obsessed “Maniac” & grimy 80s NYC is the perfect setting for this sleazy classic, with great effects (& possibly the best cameo ever) from Tom Savini.

One of the more extreme movies of the 1980s, this grainy, black and white, dialogue free release is the stuff of nightmares. It’s visually and aurally disturbing and definitely not a movie for everyone.

One of a slew of Italian-made post-apocalyptic action movies released in the wake of Mad Max 2, this time from the maestro himself, Lucio Fulci.
It feels like the stepping stone between Rollerball (1975) and The Running Man (1987) and, although not peak Fulci, it is a fun watch.

Bloody sect - 1982
A Spanish production in the same vein as Rosemary’s Baby with a dash of Manhattan Baby and a sprinkling of Beyond The Door. It’s sleazy and bloody and pretty entertaining.
Gordon/Yuzna’s second venture is another Lovecraft story. Where most people have struggled to bring the writer’s work to the screen, this collaboration has produced the most memorable of the lot. A great cast & fantastic effects from Mark Shostrom make this essential viewing.
Bloodbath At The House Of Death - 1984
A very British, very funny, horror spoof parodying many popular movies from the early 80s but with a spirit of its own.
