Key developments included the seizure of 115 kg of cocaine worth over $121 million off Gujarat and a projectile attack on a commercial vessel near Iraq, highlighting persistent maritime security challenges across the IOR.

🇮🇳🤝🇺🇸 Defense Cooperation

India and the United States held the 29th Army-to-Army Staff Talks (#AAST) in Hawaii, co-chaired by Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (Strategy), Indian Army, and Lt Gen Joel Vowell, Deputy Commanding General, US Army Pacific.

The talks focused on enhancing defence cooperation, strengthening interoperability, expanding professional military exchanges, and deepening operational collaboration in support of shared security interests across the Indo-Pacific. Both sides appreciated the growing scope of Army-to-Army engagements and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the first tranche of the bilateral #trade #agreement is expected to be concluded by mid-July.

The announcement follows June 1–4 trade negotiations in New Delhi, where a U.S. delegation led by Assistant USTR Brendan Lynch held talks with Indian officials.

Minister also announced that a higher-level U.S. delegation led by USTR Jamieson Greer @jamiesongreer is expected to visit India later this month to #finalize outstanding issues and advance the broader trade pact.

• Individual overseas investors allowed to invest in listed Indian companies under the Portfolio Investment Scheme
• Investment limit per overseas investor increased to 10% from 5%
• Aggregate limit for all overseas individual investors raised to 24% from 10%
• Fully Accessible Route expanded to include new 15-, 30- and 40-year Government Securities and Sovereign Green Bonds
• Short-term #investment, concentration and security-wise limits for #FPIs in G-Secs removed under the General Route
• Overall FPI limits retained at 6% of Central Government securities and 2% of State Government securities
• Interest and capital gains earned by FPIs on Government Securities exempted from income #tax effective April 1, 2026

USTR has proposed additional tariffs of 10%–12.5% on imports from the affected economies. Requests to testify are due by June 22, public comments by July 6, and hearings will be held on July 7, 2026, before a final decision is made.

The bill would close loopholes allowing firms with contracts under $5 million to avoid ownership disclosure and foreign ownership, control, or influence (FOCI) mitigation requirements, while aligning the definition of “beneficial owner” with existing U.S. defense law.
