I've spent a few therapeutic hours this evening cleaning up this damaged daguerreotype image - it is actually the earliest surviving Japanese photograph. It was taken 167 years ago, showing the feudal lord Shimazu Nariakira (1809-1858), photographed in 1857 by his retainer, Ichiki Shirō. The photo was believed lost for a century but turned-up in a warehouse in 1975 in rather a poor state. I've tried to clean off some of the muck and water-damage to better see the gentleman beneath, whilst retaining the essence of the original portrait...

@dai_alectic Kinda agree. State coercion becomes visible at these moments. You don't have to be an anarchist to see the problems. Also, the feelings these people had haven't gone away and need addressing.
