I made a big mistake 🫠
In my rush to update Voice Control for ChatGPT for the latest ChatGPT release, I included some experimental features. One of these required the "tabs" permission, which I assumed was no big deal.
Unfortunately, I was mistaken.
Turns out, the permission was unnecessary and it also allowed access to users' browsing history. This triggered alerts for all users, prompting them to either accept the change or disable the extension. I corrected this immediately, but due to the Chrome Store’s review process, there was a 24 hour delay in the fix being live.
This resulted in a loss of about 5-10% of the users, which is significant given the 500,000-strong user base. Gratefully, it wasn't more.
For fellow Chrome Extension developers: a word of advice, always review the "Permissions warnings list" in the extension docs before tweaking your permissions.
To the affected users, I apologize for the inconvenience. Rest assured, your browsing history has always been and will remain private. 🙏
