SUMMER RAIN: This was way before most of you were born, but there was a great song by Johnny Rivers in the 60s called Summer Rain.

This question was raised this morning by a follower ”Can you speak on the very wet weather we’ve been having? I know it’s summer but this seems much worse.”

The map attached to this post shows rain total anomaly since late May. The colors of green and blue represent areas with above average rain.

A persistent upper-level ridge has stayed just west of Alabama. Instead of sitting directly overhead and suppressing storms, it’s acted like a “ring of fire,” allowing disturbances to ride around its edge and trigger clusters of thunderstorms across the Southeast. These organized thunderstorm clusters move across Alabama from north to south on the eastern periphery of the ridge.

It’s worth remembering that summer rainfall here is naturally very uneven. One neighborhood may receive 3 inches of rain while another just a few miles away stays almost completely dry.

So yes, many communities have had an unusually wet stretch lately, but it’s the result of a favorable atmospheric pattern rather than anything out of the ordinary.
