‘Chelsea Football Club has completed the signing of one of the big names in world football with @TSilva3 joining on a one-year contract, with the club having the option of a further 12 months,’ our official website wrote to announce the Brazilian’s arrival in August 2020.
How much blame in % would you give the following departments for the crisis we're currently in?
🔹 Owners
🔹 Recruitment staff
🔹 Mauricio Pochettino
🔹 Players
This guy hasn't played one proper season with no miss and he gets labelled as best RB/RWB in the world **WHEN FIT**
Put some respect when you say best. KDB is best because he plays and then delivers consistently. Saka can be put into that bracket. Sorry but not James.
How people nowadays just speak of someone as best in the world without giving a better look is beyond me.
Reece James has the **POTENTIAL** to be the best right wing back in the world of football. Just like there will be 10 other RWB who have **POTENTIAL**
Paul Merson on Reece James: "When he is fully fit, Reece is the best right wing back in the world of football. But he cannot show that because he’s on the sidelines too much.
So, now he needs to be patient, listen to his body and make sure he gets healthy. The problem I think he has is that he loves football. He wants to just play football and that means he rushes back from injuries quicker than he should."
This thread follows the current Chelsea's hierarchy preferred data method and exactly shows why patience is the key.
Remove Silva from this data and it gets even more skewed.
I personally think Chelsea is moving in right direction. Patience is the key.
I compared career senior league starts of Chelsea's most used XI vs City, Liverpool, Arsenal & Spurs. Median age of Chelsea's most used side = 23.
Players with >76 senior league starts (2 full seasons) in M.O XI –
Liverpool, Arsenal: 0
City, Spurs: 2
Chelsea: 5 (6, last week)
Most just want to forget Newcastle game, but here are my thoughts that actually challenge a lot of what I’ve seen on here:
Chelsea weren’t actually as bad as many claim. I only watched yesterday and from what I read it sounded like we were dominated. The reality is we were toe-to-toe with Newcastle for most of the match, even had the better chances until minute 60. The two turning points were conceding the two goals in less than two minutes, and then the James red card. Very poor moments of individual mistakes, yes, but I wouldn’t write off the whole performance.
Starting with the good:
🟢 We actually had several excellent transition moves and quick buildup from the back. Usually CBs, FBs, and Enzo in middle involved. We sliced through Newcastle under their press very effectively until final third.
🟢 Our pressing was actually quite effective for the most part, and we had more duels won (57 vs 53) and tackles won (26 vs 20), and interceptions (12 vs 9). We actually caused two big turnover mistakes (Pope in first half, Trippier in second) that we failed to punish. If we had whole game and narrative would be different.
🟢 Chelsea actually won the aerial battle, despite the ridiculous number of crosses Newcastle were allowed (see bad bellow). Chelsea won twice as many aerials as Newcastle (10 vs 5). Silva and James each won 2/2, Cucu 1/1, and Badi 3/5.
🟢 I continue to be perplexed by the Enzo narrative, as he was actually our best player. Our best moves flowed through him, and he seemed the only one to be fully focused the entire match. Several excellent long balls as always (6/7 accurate), 93% overall pass accuracy, several dangerous passes into the box, and one powerful effort Pope did well to save from a James cutback.
But of course, we did still lose 4-1. The biggest issues:
❌ Individual mistakes from lapses in judgment. Hard to tell just what caused it, but Silva and James looked rattled mentally before their mistakes. Silva had one smaller mistake (conceding a corner) first, and then the big one happened right after going 2-1 down. James was having arguments with the Newcastle bench at one point, then had the bad free kick he passed straight into a Newcastle defender. Something got into the heads of both. Extra concerning as they were the two that wore the armband.
❌ Badiashile was very rusty. Only his second appearance coming back from injury and it showed he wasn’t ready for a game of this intensity. His usual quality on the ball from the back was nervy with several inaccurate passes, he was too easily beaten by Gordon 1v1 for the final goal, and he should probably have scored from his header from a corner. I still have faith in him and put it down to rust.
❌The major tactical issue from Poch of the game was allowing Newcastle to overload on the right flank for crosses. Cucu is a great defender when on the front-foot but is actually quite poor 1v1 on the back-foot, and on top of it Newcastle overloaded players to get open cross looks (especially from Trippier). Sterling was guilty of extremely
lazy tracking back several times, and even with Ugo trying to help he doesn’t close down as fast as Caicedo, so it was a huge issue. Luckily we weren’t punished from those due to aerial wins mentioned above, but it was still a big gamble.
❌Gallagher, Sterling (despite his goal), and Jackson to me were the most to blame for our poor offensive output. Palmer didn’t have a great day either but he was more hot and cold. Gallagher in particular had his worst game this season, and it exposed his technical limitations and overall ceiling IMO. His lack of press resistance when coordinated by multiple players was on display, and even when he won the ball from the Pope and Trippier mistakes he wasted those golden chances.
Ultimately, some more character and leadership in tough moments is what this team needed most.
As much as I hate to admit it, this is true. I like that Chelsea had a 3 game win run but the tides will turn soon.
Expect more mistakes, and hence more losses in the upcoming grinding schedule.
Pochettino will need to keep tweaking the system to get the group to where it needs to be.
Chelsea need to become more rigid in possession and more aggressive out of possession.
Both aspects were major flaws, and they have been improved somewhat, but there's still work to do 🛑
I'm not surprised people are picking on Thiago. Fans will always look for a scapegoat. When the team isn't playing well, it affects everyone.
I have people telling me that Gusto was bad too. Reason they gave is that he didn't cross well. He had a couple of cut-backs but nobody was there to connect. Of course, crossing is a two-way thing, if there is no box presence, you won't complete a cross.
Point is, the whole team didn't function as a team today but discrediting and insulting selected players without a clear understanding of the situation is just being unnecessarily toxic.
And that's my fear about this fanbase. We are so toxic that the players find it difficult to avoid. It doesn't help anybody.
A loan also works. Bayern are still standing in this deal because they know Chelsea has too many players in that position.
Initially I was also of the opinion to sell only. However, it does not hurt if he performs good, stays fit and plays for one of the top european team.
Chelsea have rejected new approach from Bayern for Trevoh Chalobah as it was again on loan deal. ⛔️🔴 #CFC
Conversations continue in order to find a way, nothing sealed or agreed at this stage.
Selling your own and buying someone else's is all about asset trading and FFP engineering, and nothing about improving chances of winning. This is what Chelsea are about now.
Selling your own and buying someone else's is all about asset trading and FFP engineering, and nothing about improving chances of winning. This is what Chelsea are about now.
This needs to stop now. This is not needed at all imp. Why do this question? Just to get more clicks?
Chelsea lost in past to Pool for VVD. Pool lost to Chelsea for Caicedo and Lavia. This happens all the time. Chapter close and move on.
🗣️ Pep Guardiola's rant against FIFA and UEFA: “My first pre-season, I had 25 days to prepare for the first official match against Skonto Riga to qualify for the Champions League that we eventually won. Now, they give you four, or five days, and then look how many ACLs.
They make you go to Asia, to the United States, really tough matches, derbies, big games, and people fall, and they will keep falling and falling because the show must go on.
If Courtois isn't there, then someone else will be, right? And if Militao isn't there then someone else will be, and if Kevin isn't there then someone else will be.
This is a lost battle unless the players themselves stand up for themselves and go 'We aren't playing'. It's a lost battle, nothing UEFA or FIFA will do.”
Last word on all of this today. I don't complain out of some sense of loyalty to the academy, or any bollocks about followers, clicks and impressions. It's borne out of an unwavering belief that Chelsea's best path to success is through a strong Cobham representation in the team.
