@tegmark So by trying to maintain his metanarrative of ‘life’ as something to be enshrined your brother is committing an immoral act by restricting the will. The will shall take what it wants, and as we stand, nature and the human body stand in the way.

@tegmark So in this framework your brother’s thesis is half right in the sense that nature was once revered as a more powerful moral arbiter. And he’s also right that there is a ‘war on nature’ but, I would argue, only in so far as it impairs the will.

@andrewdoyle_com Morality only fills voids where technical barriers exist. Only technology nullifies moral squabbles. Fully transitioning one's body to one thing or another is a technical barrier. Once solved, the moral issue disappears. The eschaton is the resolution of all technical hurdles.

If theists could provide a novel, testable prediction that anticipated an effect they would expect to see if a god exists then that would count as some evidence.

In time it seems feasible that humanity will come to see the faculties of the mind (emotion/impulses/modes of imagination etc.) as ‘physical’ obstacles to the freedom of the raw will. These things will be like furniture in the room of the mind; changeable at whim.

Most futurologists are concerned with what will additionally emerge with progress. It’s far easier to predict what will be abolished by it - everything in reality.

Therefore, given this constant, it may be possible to map out humanity’s future via its growing mastery of physical reality via technology. In this scenario, total mastery would involve the manipulation of all natural laws within and beyond the known universe

There does not seem to have existed a technology that has not been fully exploited to redundancy before being abandoned. Humans have not yet displayed the ability to avoid total technological saturation.

@kidology_co Until then I would expect tribal antagonisms to shift from one fashionable trait to another. It’s likely the undue stress caused by the hyper-interconnected social forces of tech, like VR, that’ll motivate us to engineer our brains for the new world.

@kidology_co Opinion - tribalism, racial or otherwise, is an evolved intuition. It’s very likely that tribalistic social divisions will plague us until the physical part of the brain that creates those intuitions is, inevitably, altered or removed across some future generation.

@timsoret As without humans, and their desire to conserve other life, the Earth is subject to a far more risky set of circumstances, as you pointed out.

@timsoret I'm not sure of the soundness of saying anything is 'anti-life' or 'anti-nature' as neither of those things have a concerted goal or ideology to be against.
I think it's tidier to say that it's hypocritical for staunch conservationists to argue against the flourishing of humans.
