PlayStation hardware sales in the US crashed to their worst May in more than 25 years.
>PS5 sales were down 58% compared to last year,
>Spending on PlayStation hardware dropped 43% after Sony raised prices across the PS5 lineup.
Even with the big drop, the PS5 was still the second-best-selling console in May. The Nintendo Switch 2 took the #1 spot in both units sold and total sales.
The average PS5 price also jumped to $672, up 33% from a year ago.
French retailer LDLC is making fun of Valve’s new Steam Machine by launching its own gaming PC called the PC STIM.
For €999 (€1,039 if pre-built), the PC STIM includes:
- AMD Ryzen 5 8400F processor
- Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB graphics card
- 16GB DDR5 RAM
- 500GB NVMe SSD
Standard PC parts that can be upgraded later.
LDLC says that for about the same price as Valve’s Steam Machine, buyers can get a gaming PC with better graphics performance and the freedom to upgrade the hardware in the future.
This is literally what Valve wanted though.
It's the same reason they made the Steam Deck. They wanted to normalize a new platform the industry would copy. Now we have the ROG Ally, Legion, Claw, etc.
Valve literally wants console footprint gaming PCs to bring more console players into the PC realm. Valve is a software company. Not a hardware company.
@Wario64 all these companies have a gentlemen's agreement to build AI slop centers and raise prices. They all make way more money. Keep in mind, Apple is PARTNERS with OpenAI, the AI datacenter slop kings (among others).
consumers get screwed. this is not sustainable.
Memory-maker Micron has found a way to keep prices for its products sky-high for another five years, by signing 16 “strategic customer agreements”
shortages in memory and storage will take considerable time to improve,” he said. “Even as we expect industry supply to improve gradually in 2028, we currently do not have line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up with increasing demand.”
Micron's CEO said in the company's latest earnings report that the shortage of memory chips is expected to continue through 2027 and possibly longer.

A Valve employee says buying RAM has become much harder due to the ongoing memory shortage and rising demand from AI companies.
According to the employee, memory suppliers come to Valve once a month with a price and a set amount of RAM they can buy.
Valve either accepts the deal or passes on it. If the company says no, the suppliers usually don’t come back with another offer.
“Look, there’s no contracts. There’s nothing. Those guys… they give us a price every month or something and they say, ‘you can buy that many,’ and it’s yes or no. And if we say no, then they never talk to us again.”
The company says the current market has made hardware components much more expensive than usual.
Valve has explained why its new Steam Machine is so expensive after players criticized the price.
The entry-level model starts at around €1,000, while higher-end versions with more storage cost up to €1,500 and Valve says no discounts are planned.
According to Valve, keeping the price high helps support an open and sustainable PC gaming ecosystem over the long term.
The company also says that users with compatible hardware can install the same operating system on their own PCs.
For those who find the Steam Machine too expensive, Valve suggests either building a PC themselves or buying a traditional game console.
A new Steam game called Congratulations On Your Purchase is priced at $999.99, making it one of the most expensive titles on the platform.
According to its creators, “This game is not for everyone. It is for those who understand that prestige has a price.” They also describe it as “the most expensive game on Steam.”

No idea if this game is a joke or a social experiment

A dad says Valve has “a customer for life” after the company sent him a free replacement Steam Deck case.
He reached out to Steam Support after his baby threw up on the original case and asked if he could buy a new one.
Instead, Valve told him they had already ordered a replacement and would send it free of charge.
“Valve has a customer for life. I reached out asking if I could buy a replacement case after my newborn got sick all over mine, and they just sent one for free.”
“I know it’s a small thing, but this kind of customer service means a lot.”
