Arc Review: Wano 🐉

8/10 (Act 1: 6 · Act 2: 7 · Act 3: 9)

Pretty much the longest arc that I've read, and it was split up into three acts. Act one I found to be very boring. Act two was a little bit better, and act three was peak, like really good. Some of the best fights in One Piece so far.

I do actually really like the setting of Wano. It's beautiful. I think this is one arc where the anime might be slightly better than the manga, just because you can actually tell what's going on with the art. So I'll probably rewatch this arc in the anime (One Pace ofc).

Kaido as a villain was really cool. I like that he seemed like a bad guy just for the sake of being a bad guy. I don't really remember any tragic backstory or anything like that. He seemed like an asshole just for the sake of it… and I respect that lol. His character design was great. He's definitely top three villains for me. I don't know if he's my favorite, but top three fs.

I like that Luffy tried to fight Kaido and FAILED twice. After the first time, we saw a pretty decent amount of character development with Luffy. He got imprisoned and met the yakuza boss, Hyogoro the Flower, who taught him about Haki, which he then used to eventually defeat Kaido. Even in the second fight Luffy lost, but he started actually inflicting some damage on Kaido. This was great to see bc after the time skip, Luffy was feeling a little overpowered imo.

I love the dialogue between Law, Kid, and Luffy, and how they're always competing with each other. Law would always get pissed off if it seemed like people were bossing him around, which is hilarious to me. At one point he teleported someone over mid-fight just to tell them to shut up, basically.

Great Moments:

Law, Kid and Luffy playing chicken with the fireball, Big Mom and Kaido fighting and then teaming up, Robin's fight against Black Maria, seeing Big Mom get defeated (never liked her tbh), Zoro vs King, the Momonosuke reveal, Buggy's guild putting bounties on admirals (based).

The biggest surprise for me this arc was Kid and his powers. I ended up really enjoying any fight he was a part of.

Bad Moments:

The pacing was horrible, especially in the first part. The entire arc felt extra long (it was).

The biggest letdown for me was some of the Animal Kingdom Pirates designs. In general I thought they looked pretty goofy, and not in a good way. King's BDSM design was pretty sick though.

Lastly, the art style was very busy, noticeably more busy than other arcs. It seemed like there were speed lines in every fucking panel, like Oda was just trying to fill up every single piece of white space, and I genuinely found it hard to keep track of things compared to something like Bleach, where there's a lot of white space.

Overall the ending was pretty satisfying. They saved the day, Wano was saved, and it was pretty cool to see Momonosuke's character development. I'm more into manga in general, but I've heard that this is the arc where a new studio picked up the animation, so I'll definitely be watching it.
