If you don’t pay market rates for finance and leadership roles at a company drowning in £20bn of debt, you end up with mediocre people who make the problems even worse. Good talent have options, they could easily go to another company that’s less in the spotlight. Underpay them and the failure accelerates.

Also, nationalisation isn’t “easy” and it doesn’t magically fix anything. It just transfers the cost, the debt and the risk onto taxpayers.

The youngest of the infamous “three W’s” and, unfortunately the only one that is currently open (Woking and Worplesdon are both closed for scheduled maintenance. This served as a wonderful introduction to Heathland golf. It’s not a long course, but its charm cannot be understated. Lovely routing and uber-firm conditions given the surprisingly sunny weather the Surrey area has received this summer. Fantastic day at my first course played in England!
