@NWSBayArea@News24680 That earthy smell is directly related to protohuman water foraging behavior. The blue-green algae that are often present in moist conditions release compounds (geosmin/MIB) that humans are incredibly adept at detecting (<5ppt). An adaptation to finding water in a drought!
@themaxburns As a trained scientist the question seems clear. Did she do work worthy of being included? It’s measurable. Thats what scientific thinking is. Being pro anything precisely because of gender is being an ideologue.
@WaterEdFdn @Nat_EGarcia Wow. White people that built most of the infrastructure we use today have died and we are all the better for it??!? What exactly is your mission statement? Are you water oriented or focused on race ideology being retroactively applied in a way that disparages European Americans?
@insighthappens @TOGregTO @nytimes She was well aware. The helicopters and police motorcade were all there in abundance. She was mugging for a photo from the older lady above her on the bluff. Unfortunately it’s today’s pathologies writ large. It’s all about me! And getting the ‘gram.
@USGS_ShakeAlert@waEMD Is there data, not anecdote, to support staying in bed? I can be out of my house and in my yard in five seconds (glass shard free). My risk of overhead hazards is then zero for the remainder of the quake. Repetition doesn’t render something true. Is this evidence based?
@Cal_OES Appreciate all you guys do! As much as you can filter notifications please do. I want to maintain the the diligence I felt with tonight’s warning.
@Kat76756180 @donwinslow This herd has been managed by hunting for a hundred years outside of NPS land. When hunting was reduced they spread to NPS land. 12 is the number of hunters not bison. Hunting is one of several tools being used to reduce the damage to our park.
@Kat76756180 @donwinslow Good tools but not feasible here. The North Rim is incredibly rugged and remote. NPS has a mandate to protect the full ecosystem. Not just the charismatic megafauna.
@mercnews The fog of war has descended into the minds of our park stewards. Species density drives disease spread. We are blessed with massive public open spaces with plenty of space for distancing. Fix parking issues. Nature is an essential activity.
@celafacchinei@neiltyson Respectfully I think that phrase was coined by Sagan to deflate the ambient hubris of our species. I think it’s complementary to the quote above. To feel very big or very small has the same effect: the dissolution of the ego that tells us we are separate from all.
