NEWS: Elon Plans xAI Supercomputer, Dubbed ‘Gigafactory of Compute’

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI plans to build a supercomputer with 100,000 specialized GPUs, which would be at least four times larger than the biggest AI clusters today.

The massive "gigafactory of compute" could help the young startup catch up to older and better-funded rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft, who are also planning similarly sized AI chip clusters.

- The supercomputer would require billions in spending and significant power access. Musk aims to have it running by fall 2025.
- XAI could partner with Oracle, to whom it is already the largest H100 chip customer.
- The cluster would accelerate development of xAI's Grok AI assistant with fewer speech restrictions.
- Finding a location with sufficient power (likely 100MW) will be key. Remote areas are becoming popular for AI data centers.

Major tech players are all racing to build increasingly large GPU clusters, believing more computing power is the key to stronger AI. Even Tesla is developing an in-house AI supercomputer.
