It’s going to be a top issue for me and since 2008 I’ve never voted for a losing candidate. I swing between dem and 3rd party and If the democrats can’t win me over they lose.

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot is how 2028 Dem presidential candidates are going to talk about Israel during the primaries.

I don’t think it’ll be a top issue (or even top 3 issue) for most primary voters, but how candidates talk about it will be a moral barrier to entry for a lot of them, particularly as they are responding to any heuristic to help narrow down their choices from what I expect to be 20+ viable-ish candidates.

Basically it comes down to “do you have the judgment, courage & moral compass to call out horrible things when you see it.” Which extends beyond Israel-Gaza, but to domestic matters as well. Will you stand up to bullies? Corporations? Corruption?

And what polls like this show is that “Netanyahu is just a bad egg, once he’s gone things will be fine” is just plain wrong — and will likely not be enough for even many normie Dem voters.

This is another in a long line of data points that shows that the desire for right wing, aggressive policy toward Palestinians is deeply embedded in the Israeli people at this time. Bibi is a war criminal and sociopath, but the issue is systemic — it won’t magically get better once he’s out of office.

And Democratic presidential hopefuls would do well to be open and honest with primary voters about that, and move beyond the talking point of “Bibi bad” as a way of skirting around the issue.
