Strict action against crime is necessary, but is public humiliation and beating in the name of law really justified?

A video of police allegedly beating Faizal, accused in the Kajal murder case, with sticks in the middle of the road is going viral on social media.

If he has committed a crime, he should be produced before a court and punished only after due process. Who gave the police the right to punish an accused on the streets?

@India_NHRC will the National Human Rights Commission take cognizance of this alleged violation of human rights?

The law must punish crime, but the law itself must not be broken in the name of enforcing it.

@NsNitinsinha This is true.. there is an element of wastage. On the other hand, jugaad fixes need to be judged one at a time. If jugaad fix is done by company service, and headlight later fails, leading to an accident, who will be responsible? It's tough for them to take a call in such cases.

In Budaun, Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit man named Rajesh was taken into police custody. He was later seen collapsing outside the lockup. His family alleges that he was brutally beaten while in custody.

Uttar Pradesh is increasingly becoming a graveyard for Dalits. The custodial violence and repeated atrocities against Dalits are deeply disturbing and shameful.

One of the suggestions I have for our Honourable Chief Minister Joseph Vijay is to consider Singapore like laws on drug dealing and high level corruption.

Singapore awards the death penalty for drug dealing and for high level corruption. They do enforce these laws.

In the Indian context, at the Ministerial level and at the all India services level (IAS, IPS etc) we must:

1. Drastically raise the pay.
2. Any future corruption should attract the death penalty.

Raising the pay is equally important and we should declare an amnesty for past sins so we do not endlessly debate the past.

The courts should enfoce it, after proper review and due process but due process can not mean 30 year delay. Sigapore courts are very efficient and we can learn from them.

I have been an ardent fan of Lee Kuan Yew my entire adult life and I have read every one of his speeches! We must study his approach.
