A truly impactful moment of leadership, collaboration and progress for women in the maritime sector.
At the Nigerian Ports Authority’s International Women’s Day event, an inspiring gathering of women advocates and industry leaders came together, united by this year’s theme: Give to Gain - a call to invest in one another, lift others and create pathways for lasting impact.
Abimbola Ini-Abasi delivered a powerful keynote that set the tone for meaningful conversations, followed by an engaging panel session featuring Kenechi Edith Okezie, Halimatul Abdul, Abimbola Ini-Abasi & myself with thoughtful moderation by Ayo Mairo-Ese.
It served as a strong reminder that when women are empowered and supported, they don’t just contribute, they lead and transform industries.

The £746 million financing for the modernisation of Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port represents a defining milestone in Nigeria’s maritime and trade ecosystem.
This initiative goes beyond infrastructure upgrade, it is a deliberate step toward enhancing national competitiveness, improving trade efficiency and unlocking long-term economic value.
Key outcomes are clear:
* Deeper berths to accommodate larger vessels
• Significant increase in cargo handling capacity
• Drastic reduction in vessel dwell time from approximately 15 days to as little as 1–5 days.
These improvements will directly translate into lower logistics costs, increased throughput and a more efficient supply chain environment.
More importantly, the broader economic implications are substantial. Reduced port costs will ease pressure on businesses, improve trade margins and enhance Nigeria’s attractiveness as an investment destination.
At the same time, this positions Nigeria as a strategic transshipment hub for West and Central Africa, while strengthening its role within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
In addition, the expected boost in non-oil exports particularly across agriculture and trade underscores the project’s alignment with Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.
This is what impactful infrastructure looks like: catalytic, forward-looking and central to national growth.

A significant milestone for Nigeria’s maritime sector 🇳🇬
The £746 million financing agreement between UK Export Finance (UKEF), the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Federal Ministry of Finance marks a major step toward the comprehensive redevelopment of Apapa Quays and Tin Can Island Ports in Lagos.
This transformative project is designed to modernize port infrastructure, align operations with international standards, improve cargo turnaround time and significantly expand capacity - further strengthening trade ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria while positioning our ports for greater global competitiveness.
At the Nigerian Ports Authority, we played a critical role in structuring and advancing this landmark transaction by working collaboratively across Government institutions and International partners to ensure a bankable, sustainable financing framework.
In my capacity as Executive Director, Finance and Administration, I was actively involved in driving the financial strategy, coordinating key stakeholders and supporting the negotiation process that culminated in the successful execution of this agreement. This achievement reflects the power of teamwork, strategic vision and institutional commitment.
Progress that speaks to the future of trade, efficiency and global collaboration.
Big WIN. Bold STEP. Real IMPACT.

Happy International Women’s Day!
The Nigerian Ports Authority proudly celebrates the resilience, dedication, and invaluable contributions of women in the maritime sector—including firefighting, security, piloting, engineering, hydrography, administrative and vessel-support services such as aids to navigation. These remarkable women are excelling even in roles that traditionally demand male-kind of strength.
The Managing Director, Dr. @AbuDantsoho, noted that he deliberately prioritized gender equality in key appointments, starting with his aides and Technical Assistants: “Women hold 60% of these roles, with men making up the remaining 40%. This intentional step underscores NPA’s commitment to advancing women’s participation and success across the maritime industry.”
We salute the remarkable women of NPA and beyond who continue to drive progress, break barriers, and shape a more equitable future for the sector.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, The Guardian Nigeria featured inspiring and award-winning Amazons across the country and I was honoured to be included with an article titled “VIVIAN RICHARD-EDET: AN AMAZON, A FINANCIAL TECHNOCRAT AND A STRATEGIC ADMINISTRATOR CREATING WEALTH IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY.”
The feature reflects the impact that purposeful leadership, sound financial stewardship and strategic administration can have on critical sectors such as the Maritime industry.
I hope recognitions like this continue to inspire more people especially women, to pursue excellence, demonstrate dedication and apply strategic thinking in contributing meaningfully to nation-building.

On 22 January 2026, the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola (CON) officially launched the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund - CVFF application portal at an event held in Lagos (Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos)
The launch marks the first operational step in unlocking access to the fund, allowing eligible Nigerian shipowners to formally apply for financing.
The newly launched digital portal enables Nigerian shipowners to apply for loans under the CVFF.
The portal is designed to streamline applications, improve transparency and reduce bureaucratic barriers that held back disbursement for years.
The launch ends more than two decades of dormancy in the cabotage financing scheme and is seen as a major boost for Nigeria’s Marine & Blue Economy and Maritime sector as it would potentially stimulate local shipbuilding and maritime services and reduce dependency on foreign-flagged vessels create jobs, strengthen local capacity and retain economic value within the country
