The Ebola Disease and Kenya's Role in the Response - A Thread🧵
1/5: 📌 What is Ebola?
Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a rare but highly severe and often fatal illness caused by orthoebolaviruses. It is a type of viral hemorrhagic fever that damages blood vessels and affects the body's ability to clot blood. The disease was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and at the same time in Nzara, South Sudan. Symptoms usually begin with sudden fever, severe headache, muscle pain, and extreme fatigue, making it easy to confuse with malaria or flu. Within a few days, patients may develop severe vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and in serious cases internal and external bleeding. If the infection is fatal, patients usually die within 6 to 16 days after symptoms begin due to severe shock, fluid loss, and organ failure.
