i think to build mastery in anything you need to put in the hours and do something a thousand times. there's no substitute for that. if you build a compiler 1000 times, you will definitely learn something.

the question i think, is whether that mastery in understanding the code still matters when agents do all the work. if you buy the "coding is solved" thing, it probably doesn't, and you're better off learning the higher level skill of managing agents. we are moving up an abstraction level, and while understanding the code today does give you some edge in managing agents, who's to say what the future looks like?

personally, i think that there is still a lot of alpha from understanding how computers, compilers, programming languages, ui frameworks, etc work. even if agents are writing all the code, you still need to know what to ask in order to build truly interesting software (ie not just crud apps). agents make the process of writing software easier, but you can only prompt what you can imagine, and if you haven't had that experience, it's difficult to articulate something you've never seen or done.

so i still feel like learning these things matter, if only to be able to put interesting thoughts into words so that your agent can build them

every team needs a gardener. someone quietly watching the stream of PRs flowing into your codebase, noticing the smells: the third isRecord this week, the lint suppressions creeping like ivy across your carefully planned garden. a steady hand tending the weeds that would engulf it in slop if left unchecked.

with careful grooming it stays a garden. every weed you pull becomes a rule, so it can't grow back. without that, it's just whatever grew.

Lol sounds like you asked Claude to generate a massive list of tech terms... "IAM" should probably rbac. Did you forget people can ask questions and learn and that at one point you googled all this stuff and acquired it over years of progressive discovery, assuming you even have in depth about each of these topics. Buzz buzz buzz... I can't believe this got so much traction.

Also experimenting with better remote and agent collaboration with whiteboarding like excalidraw. I am seeing a sad trend of more talking and less visuals in industry and it seems like folks are talking past each other more and more these days.

I just tried a workflow last night where I used imagen to iterate on diagram before trying to build it with drawio, mermaid, etx.
Seemed to be a lot faster and more accurate.

I think the constraint of not allowing my you to finagle the image, forces a focus on content which helps me go a lot faster.

Then your agent has much better high fidelity image to work when building the code based official diagram.
