@JeffClarkUS@RyanMNeuhaus@TomKlingenstein@ItsYourGov If you want to pin your good name to the virtues of the emperor, by all means! Some of us recognize his recriminating tendencies - tendencies that tend to be contagious.
@RyanMNeuhaus@TomKlingenstein@JeffClarkUS@ItsYourGov@TomKlingenstein , who in 2022 laughably praised Trump's "uncommon courage and firmness of purpose" - as though his readers would blithely accept that their only options are either 1) TDS or 2) pretending our emperor's Truth Social posts exhibit courage and firmness of purpose.
@IVMiles If we wish to recover local pride in local republics, we would do well to be painfully, brutally clear as to what is and what is not a respublica.
@IVMiles The soul of the republican patriot cannot be stretched across the swathes of an empire. It tries, to be sure. But only a simulacrum of patriotism, based on abstracted and propagandized memories of the past, can remain after such an unnatural stretching.

Context mitigates the universal import of that statement for his thought, but I still find it striking that JA chose that line of defense.
@Rickersam3 From the Diary + Autobiography. Adams admits Mass. laws inconsistent w/ rel. liberty, but he still could say "the Laws of Massachusetts, were the most mild and equitable Establishment of Religion that was known in the World, if indeed they could be called an Establishment"
@polanskydj@ISI@CurtMills@Phillip_Blond I'm fine with defenses of empire, but let's just not pretend we also have a republic. There are far too many folks who should know better.
@rclu@sladesr@kvallier This isn't a problem unique to fusionists. Some of them have decent resources to meaningfully think through the limits of politics - if only they would be more willing to part ways with the doomed effort of fitting an empire-sized peg into a republican-sized hole.
@rclu@sladesr@kvallier Fusionists will be interesting when they tone down their fussing about the imperial capital do that valuable work of "moral imagination" at a much smaller level. But too many right-liberals still speak of government with too narrow a view (centered around the nation state).
@Rickersam3 As in, "Overcoming the superstitions of Catholicism and freeing the energies of mercantile self-interest is essential to liberalism. So if you're Catholic and take the Church Fathers seriously on usury, you aren't liberal."
@roddreher@veroderugy@EWErickson During the '24 campaign, he went full Stephen Douglas on mifepristone the largest cause of abortion in the US. And Vance is undoubtedly smart enough to do/say better. If you have his ear, he needs to repent of this, and publicly.
@JohnJSSoriano And if the argument is that America is *mostly* about ideas, then there's still a pretty good argument for her to lose citizenship over this kind of language, no? Or at least be legally barred from office (the essence of Aristotelian citizenship)?
