Attached is the government’s biggest economic and political problem in a nutshell, courtesy of the @bankofengland FSR. It shows how in just 18 months the government has gone from having the smallest increase in its borrowing costs, compared with US and Euro area, to the biggest, by a country mile. This is a very serious problem. It constrains everything the government might want to do, from funding public services and public servants’ pay rises to cutting taxes. And as the “risk free” rate for the UK economy, it makes borrowing more expensive for all of us and contrains an economic recovery. When you see quite how investors are punishing the UK, categorising it/us as so much riskier than other rich nations, you see the straitjacket on Hunt and Sunak.
