One thing I think is really grotesque about this whole discourse is how fast it went from "no one died because of DOGE" to "it's actually fine people died from DOGE."
That was not the original terms of the debate. The term was "did DOGE's cuts kill people?" The answer is
struggling to form a coherent take on moby dick because it’s just 4 pages of beautiful and profound character writing exploring the human condition followed by several straight chapters of autistic whale facts
"An opaque White House office staffed largely by veterans of Musk’s DOGE has quietly rebuilt some of the federal government’s most sensitive websites – for passport applications, voter registration, prescription-drug pricing and children’s savings – in ways critics say appear to violate federal law"
This is perhaps one of the most worthwhile scholarly projects in existence right now. For comparatively little money, especially compared with research in the natural sciences, we could totally transform our understanding of antiquity.
The Texas screwworm story is a version of this. The Reflecting Pool fiasco is a version of this. The Iranian war is a very large and ongoing version of this.
Everywhere you look, incompetence is having its natural consequences, with more to come. Much more, I'm afraid.
it's so cool how anyone can decide to questmaxx their life simply by flying American Airlines and thus turning every mundane trip into an Odyssey-style epic journey of taking 10 years and infinite diversions to get home
Who Is America’s Homer?
If England has Shakespeare, Spain has Cervantes, Italy has Dante, and Russia has Pushkin, then who do we have? Do we have a great poet who captures the American spirit, the American story, the American identity? We asked for contributions from @fxxfy, @DanaGioiaPoet, @zenahitz, Emily Wilson, @ae_stallings, @_Zeets, @JcScharl, @amjuster, @RossBarkan, Christian Wiman.

It’s funny, motocross at the White House is, like, fine with me. But here’s an example of something that is genuinely unforgivable but that a lot of people seem to have moved right past.
This is one of those decisions that I actually thought was not only the right call, but that a lot of Biden critics were completely unprepared for what was coming with Trump 2.0. Anyone who sees what's happening now and thinks it was a bad call is unserious to say the least.
If you have to reconstruct your doctrine of the Trinity in order to preserve your peculiar doctrine of humanity, then maybe, just maybe, there is something wrong with both your doctrine of humanity and your doctrine of God. Oh, and also your theological method.
