Roy Cooper didn’t work for Duke Energy.

He didn’t have to.

Duke’s PAC and people around the company put money into his world for years. OpenSecrets had Duke Energy at about $50,000 in his 2020 cycle, including $5,400 from Duke’s PAC to Cooper for Governor.

This didn’t start in the mansion.

When he was attorney general, Democracy North Carolina was already tracking Duke/Progress PAC money and employee gifts into Democratic politics.

Duke was also writing checks to the Democratic Governors Association while Cooper was in that orbit.

Then he moved into the Governor’s Mansion and started working with them.

That’s the Atlantic Coast Pipeline mess.

His administration sat on the water-quality permit Duke and its partners wanted. At the same time they were negotiating the state’s “mitigation” fund — which grew to $57.8 million.

Staff texts tangled that permit fight with a solar fight involving Strata Solar, the same company that leased Nash County land from the Cooper family. In the middle of it: adviser Ken Eudy, talking to Duke’s lobbyist. Eudy’s old firm had counted Duke as a client.

A Republican-commissioned investigation said Cooper used the power of his office to squeeze that fund higher. Same report said he didn’t personally pocket the $57.8 million.

I’m not saying he stuffed it in his pocket. But I am saying look at the pattern.

Duke money into the machine around him. His administration negotiating with Duke. His adviser in the room with Duke’s lobbyist. A state investigation saying he used the leverage of the office. And the people paying the light bill watching that bill climb.

On Cooper’s watch, NC residential light bills climbed nearly 30% per kilowatt from 2017-2024. Not a quiet little creep. Rates were fairly flat early, then jumped hard in 2023 & 2024.

He didn’t write the tariff with his own pen. The Utilities Commission did. Duke filed the cases. Fuel, storms, and infrastructure went into the math. He also appointed those commissioners for most of the years he was governor.

You don’t get to claim the institutions under your administration have nothing to do with your record.

This is where I get tired of the rewrite.
Cooper will tell you he fought Duke. Maybe he did. He can point to the fights.

That doesn’t erase the other ledger. Money tied to Duke. Meetings with Duke. A $57.8 million side deal. His man across the table from Duke’s lobbyist. Power a hell of a lot more expensive when he left than when he walked in.

You don’t have to work for Duke Energy for Duke Energy to have a seat in your political world.

Follow the money. Follow the meetings. Follow the deals. Then follow the bill into somebody’s mailbox.

That’s the record.

But SURE, let’s vilify Whatley who has never held an elected position before.

Because that makes sense. 🙄
