Downtown Chicago is no longer a business district, a tourist hub, or a transportation center. It is an open-air danger zone where Chicagoans, commuters, and visitors are routinely attacked, burned, shot, beaten, or terrorized in broad daylight — and the city pretends none of this is happening.

On November 19, 2025, during a https://t.co/MPWurl8WVM live feed from Lake & Dearborn, a vagrant stepped forward and hurled a drink at my vehicle. It was midday. It was unprovoked.

And it was caught on video — one more example of a downtown public environment that has completely collapsed from constant unchecked disorder.

This happened less than 48 hours after a woman was burned alive aboard a CTA Blue Line train at Clark/Lake — an attack so extreme it triggered shock statements from City Hall, with Mayor Johnson calling it “an isolated incident” even as the record shows years of escalating downtown violence.

To understand how we got here, you look at the record — the real record, the one Chicago’s political class refuses to acknowledge.

In May 2022, Joseph “Walking Man” Kromelis was set on fire while sleeping on Lower Wabash. He died months later from the burns. His killer wasn’t sentenced until late 2024. Chicago never reckoned with what happened to him.

By late 2023, Michigan Avenue was a battlefield.

On November 13, 2023, a visiting flight attendant walking near Burberry was struck in the head with a heavy birch log thrown by a mentally ill offender. She collapsed unconscious with severe skull and brain injuries.

Two days later, on November 15, 2023, 24-year-old Andrew Hulburt was murdered outside the House of Blues in River North.

On January 26, 2024, two Innovations High School students — 17-year-old Monterio Williams and 16-year-old Robert Boston — were executed on Wabash when gunmen stepped out of two cars and opened fire. More than two dozen rounds. Early afternoon. Children leaving school. A woman walking by had her jacket grazed by a bullet. It took a full year before the first suspect was charged.

In June 2024, a Streeterville couple was beaten near Grand & McClurg by a group of teens in a random attack recorded and posted online.

By 2025, downtown violence had accelerated.

On April 7, 2025, CPD shot a knife-wielding man inside the Courtyard Marriott lobby in River North at 2:30 p.m.

On June 20, 2025, a man was shot outside Lou Malnati’s on Wells Street during dinner hours, sending crowds scrambling.

Then came the Loop Puncher.

Between September 21 and October 9, 2025, Derek Rucker carried out a confirmed series of assaults across the CTA and downtown:

punching a woman on the Loyola platform,
spitting on another at Wilson,

assaulting a commuter between Addison and Belmont,

striking an officer at St. Francis Hospital,

and punching a woman at Ohio & State.

Then November arrived.

On November 17, 2025, a woman was set on fire aboard a CTA Blue Line train at Clark/Lake — a terror-level attack inside the city’s busiest station.

Two days later, on November 19, the vagrant at Lake & Dearborn threw a drink at my vehicle during a https://t.co/MPWurl8WVM live-feed. A small incident compared to the murders and the arsons — but it shows the same collapse:

Downtown Chicago is no longer a functioning public space.

It is a dangerous death zone.

Politicians can deny it.
Contractors can hide it.
Tourism boards can sugarcoat it.
