The gold standard failed because of political decisions and only fractional reserves instead of full backing. Also gold isn’t verifiable as bitcoin. People can decide if they want to settle securely on bitcoin or use faster and cheaper chains in between.
Medium of exchange is only one function of a currency. The function as a unit of account (price measuring) and the function as a store of value could be bitcoins strengths long term (store of value already here but still to volatile as the standard unit of account).
In my opinion bitcoin can just be the absolute reference point of value that cannot be ignored.
Bitcoin can replace the dollar as global reserve currency and still not be able to handle most of the transactions because of the limited block space and the slow block time that is necessary for maintaining decentralization. Even today bitcoin is transferred on other chains all the time. Final settlement will still be on the bitcoin blockchain because it’s most secure and scarce.
I meant the superior store of value as I wrote before.
You think it’s necessary that the global reserve currency is also a medium of exchange, right?
I don’t think that’s necessary but would of course be nice. Lightning is the best solution for the medium of exchange problem so far
@CatOfLongTails What is your definition of “hyperbitcoinization”? It depends on it. For me it’s achieved when bitcoin is the standard store of value globally
@CatOfLongTails I think bitcoin can be the absolute base of value without the ability to process most of the transactions. It still will be used as long term store of value and final settlement layer. Lightning is also a good enough addition. What do you think?
