For my British and European friends who are "shocked" and "surprised", here are 10 reasons you didn't see this coming.
Read this short post and then read the replies from our American friends who will confirm what I'm saying.
1. Americans love their country and want it to be the best in the world. America is a nation of people who conquered a continent. They love strength. They love winning. Any leader who appeals to that has an automatic advantage.
2. Unlike Europeans, Americans have not accepted managed decline. They don't have Net Zero here, they believe in producing their own energy and making it as cheap as possible because they know that their prosperity depends on it.
3. Prices for most basic goods in the US have increased rapidly and are sky high. What the official statistics say about inflation and the reality of people's lives are not the same.
4. Unlike you, Americans do not believe in socialism. They believe in meritocracy. They don't care about the super rich being super rich because they know that they live in a country where being super rich is available to anyone with the talent and drive to make it. They don't resent success, they celebrate it.
5. Americans are the most pro-immigration people in the world. Read that again. Seriously, read it again. Americans love an immigrant success story. They want more talented immigrants to come to America. But they refuse to accept people coming illegally. They believe in having a border.
6. Americans are sensitive about racial issues and their country's imperfect history. They believe that those who are disadvantaged by the circumstances of their birth should be given the opportunity to succeed. What they reject, however, is the idea that in order to address the errors of the past new errors must be made. DEI is racist. They know it and they reject it precisely because they are not racist.
7. Americans are the most philosemitic nation on earth. October 7 and the pro-Hamas left's reaction shocked them to their very core because, among other things, they remember what 9/11 was like and they know jihad when they see it.
8. Americans are extremely practical people. They care about what works, not what sounds good. In Europe, we produce great writers and intellectuals. In America they produce (and attract) great engineers, businessmen and investors. Because of this, they care less about Trump's rhetoric than you do and more about his policies than you do.
9. Americans are deeply optimistic people. They hate negativity. The woke view of American history as a series of evils for which they must eternally apologise is utterly abhorrent to them. They believe in moving forward together, not endlessly obsessing about the past.
10. America is a country whose founding story is one of resistance to government overreach. They loathe unnecessary restrictions, regulations and control. They understand that freedom comes with the price of self-reliance and they pay it gladly.
Underinvestment is what happens after vagrants are allowed to menace riders and pedestrians, tax-generating businesses are replaced by unlicensed smoke shops and shelters for illegal aliens, and farebeating is permitted.
Commuters don't appreciate your efforts to dump the costs of your incompetency off on them.
Enjoy watching the public transportation system crumble. 👍
When you’re punched in the head by a stranger so hard it knocks your glasses off, midday, you might start screaming too.
I got a police report with the charge of ‘harassment’. The harassment of my left cheekbone stayed blue for 2 mos.
If you are silent, no one knows - and voting only happens ev 2-4 yrs. I’m not that stoic.
Since De Blasio came in, this city IS becoming a shit hole. Every election it sinks lower. Look at the Council, the Judges, the NYS reps. Many are DSA or Marxist - you think they advocate for TRUE criminal Justice?
I get to have pie in the sky Dan Goldman as my Rep in Congress.Have you ever listened to him? And of course there’s always perennial Chuck Schumer who hasn’t been heard of in the chaos he’s presided over. He’s been our senior senator for 25 years.
Local or Fed we’re f**ked. The dismantling of our expectations of social norms, public safety, personal property rights, economic growth and stability are effected by a combination of chaos and fear, from the micro to the macro.
De Blasio passed many micros, like people being free to urinate in public (2016) the same year he permitted drinking alcohol from open containers.
A macro was the creation of the Mental Heath program, the untested Thrive program designed elsewhere to remove the ER as a first step in a MH crisis. He eliminated the NYPD Sp Unit that worked in the subways and streets to remove the mentally ill, not ignore or shoo them away.
Thrive was a disaster, costing nearly a billion dollars in 3 years and bc there was no outreach, left the mentally ill to roam around w/out intervention. There isn’t one case, one case that can serve as example of good work produced.
This was an outgrowth of Cuomo’s deinstitutionalization of the Mentally ill. More than a third of beds were cut and still reducing. Much of our subway crime, fear and danger stems from this passive program that cost a fortune with zero accountability. He dismantled it in 2019, but basically renamed it and changed its director. Any results (other than all the contractors who benefit) warranting continuation? Another grift.
Criminal Justice reform had as its goal the non incarnation of individuals awaiting trail or hearing in minor crimes(like selling weed). But it wasn’t created with a judicial discretion addition. Most arrested are treated alike except the most heinous crimes. Judges can’t use prior arrest records or the nature of the crimes to adjust the flat arraign and release. TBH more and more of our judges are coming from a Legal Aide or Public Defender background so they may have not used discretion.
My lengthy point is this. We were stable. We could/should always upgrade and look to improve, reform, but De Blasio, a Marxist disguised as a “Progressive”, dismantled some things that should have been reworked while throwing out order and safety for the entire public. Destruction is step one in revolution (hello US southern border!)
He ushered in chaos, destruction of societal institutions, half thought out reforms that were simplistic and not practicalably tested before applied, resulting in the key cornerstone to making Marxism palatable to the public - destabilization of all parts of a society.
He also brought in and supported many of our “Progressive” CC members who further the destruction of our systems w/out reasoned, effective alternatives brought in prior to destruction. Their insistance that our non legal Sanctuary City self assignment should include people from the entire world - no boundaries, no restraint. The cost bring borne by taxpaying residents of NYC will eventually exhaust our ability to sustain ALL facets of a civilized city. A major Marxist tenet to persuade compliance.
The CC is not a balanced reflection of NYC, but you can only vote for people on the ballot. “Voting” is a simplistic solution.
We’re in trouble here and have been asleep at the wheel, having abdicated our navigation to those who do not share our values.
