Imagine telling the Holy Father—the supreme pastor of the Church with all authority—that his declaration that you have been excommunicated because of schism is invalid and unjust. Thinking that’s a fine response, and that nothing will ever change.
At the same time insisting you are preserving the Church (as you believe it to be by your own authority in dismissing anything after Pius XII) and that one day either this pope or another will thank you for it.
"The question isn't whether the Pope acted fairly. The question is whether Catholics can ignore the lawful authority of the Church whenever they personally decide it's unjust."

SSPX’s new act of schism isn’t a different posture toward the Church. It’s as it was from the first consecrations. And Rome’s response isn’t a revelation. The society has always been in rupture and proudly so, but they have run a rather effective propaganda campaign that convinced trads that there was a viable option with the Society.
The recent SSPX efforts at relevance have not been to restore unity but to grow the Society; to take advantage of public sympathies and pop influencers to draw as many Catholics out of the Church as possible. Trad Inc has done a marvelous job of marketing for them.
That campaign used emotion as bait, convincing many that it was a righteous intellectual journey. Stoking anger. Teaching readers and listeners to be discontented and angry during liturgy. Taking seeds of frustration and growing them to such a degree that even Christ seemed inaccessible. Because “Novus Ordo.” That’s spiritually abusive imo and I protested against it, only to be accused of being a modernist.
When I first saw the post below in ‘23 I objected to Hall’s inclusion as an author in Crisis Magazine. Hall can write what he likes (the Church is not a cult) but writing SSPX propaganda for a mag ostensibly committed to orthodoxy seemed like a poor fit.
At any rate, tradland continues to be a hot mess as it works out the problem of authority. Nobody said it would be easy, but SSPX is not the way and never was. We have to stop looking for a magic pill cure to the human problem in the Church and return with vigor and joy to friendship with Jesus Christ.
Jesus, be our peace.
SAN ANTONIO, TX--Consequences for the choice made by SSPX and their adherants continue, today, with Catholic Bishops (such as Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller) issue statements that marriages officiated within the schismatic sect are not Sacramentally Valid.
Neither are Confessions, which would prohibit the reception of Holy Communion by these excommunicated schismatics unless they reject their schism, repent of it and return to full union.
Masses officiated at these chapels are illicit, and do not fulfill Sunday obligations for Catholics.
The gravity of the CHOICE of these schismatics is clear.
The SSPX who claims to keep tradition but yet disobey the Pope, are you guys more traditional than Cardinal Sarah? - No
But Sarah has never for once disobyed the Pope. he is a traditionalist but yet obeys the supreme pontiff.
You guys should be humble and leave pride.
@mfjlewis I like Pope Leo! He gets things done and he dosent mess around. This should have happened years ago. And let’s not forget that excommunication is medicinal discipline not damnation. Hopefully the medicine wakes them up but I doubt it will.
The Vatican has put out a very detailed timeline of everything that has happened with the SSPX from the time of the Second Vatican Council until today.
It really doesn't make the SSPX look good *at all*.
@TaylorRMarshall@cath_menarion I mean everyone already knew they didn’t have the papal mandate. They’ve been flaunting for weeks that they planned to be disobedient to the Pope.
Attended the SSPX for years. When we left and started attending diocesan TLM & NO, my faith and charity actually increased. Same w. my wife and children. Rosary everyday, confession once a month, and evangelize in our community. This schismatic nonsense if utterly false.
"Love the Pope, whatever he may be, because he is Christ on earth for us."
- Saint Josemaría Escrivá
St. Josemaría Escrivá lived through wars, persecution, and enormous changes in the Church. He knew that popes, like all of us, are human. Yet he constantly reminded Catholics to love the Pope because of the office Christ entrusted to him.
When he says the Pope is "Christ on earth for us," he does not mean the Pope is divine or incapable of sin. He means the Pope is Christ's visible representative, the successor of St. Peter, and the shepherd Christ gave His Church.
That is why loving the Pope is not about agreeing with every personal opinion or decision. It is about loving Christ enough to remain faithful to the authority He established.
Throughout history, the saints corrected errors, prayed for popes, and called for holiness, but they never tried to replace the authority of Peter with their own.
This is why the recent actions of the SSPX are so serious.
Consecrating bishops without papal approval is not simply a disagreement over tradition or the liturgy. It is a public rejection of the Pope's rightful authority over the episcopate and a wound to the visible unity of the Church.
Authentic Catholic tradition has always been preserved in communion with Peter, never apart from him.
💬 If the saints believed loving Christ meant remaining united to the Pope even in difficult times, why do so many today believe that disobedience is the way to defend the Catholic faith?
May these words strengthen someone who wants to follow Christ with both truth and unity in His Church.
As of yesterday, not just the SSPX bishops are excommunicated but also *all* those who continue to adhere to the Society. SSPX sacraments of confession and marriage declared invalid; Catholics may not attend SSPX Masses.
