Anthony Obodo: Police Can’t Be Trusted to Investigate themselves

The Nigerian authorities must effectively and impartially investigate the extrajudicial execution of Anthony Obodo — who was shot dead by police officers on Friday 29 August 2026, along Agip by Ada-George Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The police cannot be trusted to investigate themselves. Therefore, any investigation to be carried out must be independent and could lead to justice.

Family of the victim said, Anthony was driving a Lexus car when he was allegedly chased by police officers and shot at close range. His sister said: after being shot he was breathing when police officers “pulled him out of the vehicle, removed his gold chain and rings, abandoned him on the road in the rain and drove away in his car. According to reports he was found bleeding by the road by a passerby, who rushed him to a hospital. He died shortly after.

The horrifying killing of Anthony Obodo by the police is a sad reminder of consistent targeting of young men, simply for driving a flashy car, using smart phones or having a laptop and other gadgets. Amnesty International had documented cases in which police attribute crimes to young men for just wearing gold chain.

Lack of accountability is breeding and perpetuating impunity, creating an environment where police officers believe they have carte blanche to carry out atrocities.

It is unacceptable that despite many pledges of reform and ending torture and extrajudicial killings, police in Nigeria continue to operate with complete impunity, while fomenting a toxic climate of fear and corruption.

The Police in Rivers State is the most dangerous Police division in Nigeria.

Trigger happy, corrupt and deadly.

Yesterday, a police officer in broad day light shot and killed Anthony Obodo while he was driving, his car injured 3 more persons.

Anthony Obodo was not a criminal. No weapons were found on his body. He died for nothing.

This is not the first time the Police in Port Harcourt has murdered a young man for nothing. And if nothing is done, they will do it again.

Fifteen National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members were kidnapped in Kogi State on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, while returning from their orientation camp in Bayelsa State.

They were traveling to Abuja with Peace Mass Transit. They were intercepted along the Ofu/Itobe–Onicha-Igo axis in Ofu Local Government Area. The passenger manifest is attached.

The person in the video is the sister of one of the abducted victims. Please lend your voice & kindly share or retweet. They need to be rescued & reunited with their loved ones. 🙏

Hello everyone, please, I urgently need your help and attention. My sister and other NYSC corps members who left Bayelsa State yesterday were attacked along the Kogi Express Road. Sadly, the driver was killed, and the corps members were reportedly taken into the forest.

Up until now, we have not heard from them, and the family is deeply worried and devastated. We have contacted the police, but unfortunately, we have not received any positive feedback yet.

Please, I am appealing to the NYSC, the Federal Government, security agencies, and everyone who can help to urgently intervene and do everything possible to rescue them safely.

Please, we don’t want anything to happen to our loved ones. . They are someone’s children, siblings and loved ones. Their lives matter.

Please help us amplify this message and tag the relevant authorities. We are begging for urgent action before it is too late.
