Statement in Support of West Derby Preschool and Its Staff
I am deeply saddened and concerned by the situation facing West Derby Preschool, a cherished community nursery that has served local families for 35 years. Under the ownership of dedicated staff members Carmel and Nic for the last 17 years, this nursery has been a cornerstone of the community, providing care, education, and stability to countless children and families.
It is heartbreaking to learn that, despite assurances of first refusal on purchasing Bonsall Hall, the Church/Archdiocese has chosen to accept another offer – even after the preschool increased its offer to meet the £300,000 price originally suggested. This decision not only threatens the future of a vital community asset but also disregards the dedication and hard work of the staff who have invested so much into making the nursery a success.
The nursery staff have acted in good faith throughout this process, navigating an incredibly stressful and rushed situation with integrity and determination. It is unjust that their offer has been overlooked when they were willing and able to meet the agreed price. This decision risks leaving staff, parents, and children in limbo, uncertain about the future of the nursery and the vital service it provides.
This is not just about a building; this is about preserving a community hub that so many rely on. For decades, West Derby Preschool has provided a safe, nurturing environment for children, creating memories and opportunities that have shaped their lives. Losing it would be a devastating blow to the community and to those families who depend on its services.
I stand firmly with Nic, Carmel, their staff, and the families who depend on West Derby Preschool. I urge the Church/Archdiocese to reconsider its decision, prioritise the needs of the community, and honour its initial commitment to offer the preschool the first opportunity to purchase the property.
In the meantime, I encourage everyone in the community to support the preschool by voicing their concerns directly to the Church/Archdiocese. Let them know how much this nursery means to our community and how vital it is to preserve it for future generations.
