The Nigerian Association of Dental Students (NADS) stand in complete solidarity with the students of UNICAL. The cry of “Save UNICAL’s Dentistry” is not theirs alone; it is a collective outcry from all future dentists in Nigeria.

University of Calabar's VC and Provost of Medical college have asked all the students of the faculty of dentistry to transfer to other dental schools in Nigerian as they do not have facilities to enable the MDCN( medical and dental council of Nigeria) to come increase the quota for graduation from 10 to about 40. The school management knew from the beginning that the only have a quota of 10 and they still went ahead to over admit students more than they can graduate. Currently we have classes with numbers as high as 128, another class of 97. I am in final year class and we are 39 in my class.
There is a class currently above mine who have concluded their final exam( part V BDS professional exams in May) but are been left hanging because they can't graduate the 31 of them.

A few student are having suicidal thoughts already.
I am appealing that this issue be brought to the notice of the public and necessary authority so they .The vice chancellor in person of Prof. Florence Obi and the provost of Medical College can be compelled to do the needful,

Dental students at the University of Calabar are stuck right now. How can the future of an entire faculty be thrown into such uncertainty?

Final-year students who’ve finished exams can’t move forward. Those still in training don’t even know if they’ll finish. There’s no proper communication, no structure, and no certainty.

This should not be happening. Not after all the years and sacrifices. These students deserve clarity, support, and a way forward.

I’m raising my voice on behalf of the dental students at the University of Calabar, who are currently facing an unimaginable situation.

Over 300 students are currently in limbo, and some of them were allegedly told to transfer to Chemistry. Despite knowing the quota for the course is 10, the institution has admitted as high as 90 students in one class. What was the plan?

Even the current final-year class who completed their BDS exams have been denied induction and separated from their MBBS counterparts who will be inducted on July 21st.

This is very unfair. The students have begged, pleaded with the authorities, letters have been written and still, nothing.

I am calling on the relevant bodies and leaders to take urgent action. Please DO NOT WASTE THEIR TIME.
