Pleased to announce this exhibition about Type Archive founder Sue Shaw.
From her early career in publishing, to setting up her own imprint producing books of the highest standards, and her instrumental role in establishing the Type Archive, Sue’s achievements were plentiful.
A beautiful book featuring the treasures of the Type Archive’s collections is in the works.
‘Type Archived’ traces the origins of typography through the physical tools, objects and machinery that made the printed word possible.

This wasn’t new territory for Phil, who had visited Robert DeLittle’s wood letter factory in the mid-1970s. These photos were commissioned John McConnell of Face Photosetting for a small booklet announcing the licensing of some of DeLittle’s fonts.

It was a privilege that Philip Sayer, whose photography I’ve admired for years, agreed to document the Type Archive before its closure. His rich images really capture the atmosphere and are a huge asset to the book.

The Type Archive was a complicated place but it was a simple observation from a guest that inspired the organisation of the book’s contents.
He commented that it was interesting to see how many materials a letter design passed through on its journey to the printed page.
Remembering Sue Shaw, founder and formidable driving force of @thetypearchive, on what would have been her 90th birthday. Much missed!🖤
