One point of clarification: Nixon took U.S. off gold standard in 1971, but U.S. citizens were still prohibited to own gold until Jan. 1, 1975. Rest of the world bid up the price in anticipation of that date, and then it fell almost 60%. The big gains came after that initial drop.
