I think this is the first time I've ever heard anyone compare George Carlin to Ayn Rand, but let's parse this out.
Rand’s whole thing was heroic capitalist individualism. The special genius must be freed from the parasitic masses so he can build railroads, invent metal, and jack off to his own stock portfolio.
Carlin is talking about the way groups psychologically deform people. The way a decent person can become a cog in the machine. The way that individual conscience gets laundered through institutions until nobody feels responsible for what the institution does.
"Welcome my son, to the machine." -Pink Floyd.
Carlin was not saying, “All collective action is bad.” He was saying that once people start clumping together under banners, slogans, brands, uniforms, parties, churches, and flags, they often trade the beauty of the individual for the stupidity of the herd.
If you want to know about the stupidity of the herd, here's a few subjects I'd recommend for you to read up on: The smoke-filled room experiment, where people sitting alone usually reported smoke pouring into a room, but people in groups often sat there looking at each other, waiting for permission to react to reality.
The Asch conformity experiments, The Milgram experiment, groupthink, diffusion of responsibility, the banality of evil, moral disengagement, and the bystander effect.
None of that is Ayn Rand. It’s not even especially right-wing or left-wing. It’s basic human psychology.
Learn about your species, sir, before you speak to me with any confidence.
just saw someone with “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good” on their license plate.
sir, this is a public road. you don’t get to be up to no good here. you don’t get to be a little goofball. my life is in your hands. manage your mischief at home.
@sarahschauer When they first legalized marijuana in DC I decided to give it a go. I saw a pizza place I really wanted to try, too intimidated to go in I ordered a delivery and waited outside asking every delivery person if the pizza was for me.
I looked like a madman
