this narrative is far bigger than many people realize.
there are studies that shed light on the loneliness and rejection experienced by feminine lgbtqia+ thai men. even within their own community, they are often reduced to the role of the freak, the joke, their entire existence flattened into a caricature. this is a very real issue, especially considering that a significant portion of thailand's lgbtqia+ community consists of feminine men.
you've probably heard queer people say that they don't feel represented by y series. some even argue that these productions have done more harm than good, because most of them reinforce a very specific dynamic, a very specific appearance, and even a very specific way of behaving. when people fail to fit into these fictional standards—standards created to make queer identities more digestible—they face even harsher rejection. in an industry that presents itself as a stage for the rise of minorities, we constantly watch doors close on incredibly talented artists simply because they are "too queer," "too feminine," or because they embody an image of the "uke" that falls outside the narrow boundaries of what society deems acceptable. there is the uke who is "good enough" to represent queer people, and then there is the uke who is ridiculed for wearing makeup, dressing femininely, and ultimately failing to fit the mold of the "socially acceptable" queer person.
to me, this series feels like a response to the pain of thousands of queer men who live under the weight of prejudice, whose identities must remain hidden to keep doors from closing. this applies both to ordinary people who are forced to choose between being themselves and keeping a job, and to artists who have to dedicate their lives to concealing who they are just for a chance to pursue their dreams without being swallowed alive by such a cruel society.
i'm incredibly proud that namping was entrusted with this role. he is an artist with such a strong voice and remarkable courage, someone who faces harsh and cruel criticism on a daily basis simply for being who he is. at the same time, he continuously reaffirms himself as a genuine source of representation for young boys who see themselves in him and look up to him as an inspiration.
i can't wait for this series!
