KV Ramaraj Nadar (85), a member of one of the ostracised families, died around 11.30 pm on Wednesday. His community members prevented his family from cremating him in the common crematorium. SV Karai police, an incharge DSP & revenue officials allegedly refused to intervene, asking the family to obey the kangaroo court. Ramaraj's daughter-in-law, whom I spoke to while she was attending the kangaroo court at 2.30 pm, said the naattamai was demanding penalty of Rs 2.5 lakh to allow them to use the crematorium.
Tamil Nadu: Kangaroo court led by naattamai P Venkatesh ostracized eight families in Sambavarvadakarai. Instead of initiating legal action against him, Tenkasi district administration/RDO @CollrTenkasi is pleading him to revoke ostracism by arranging peace committee meeting, said CPM union secretary R Pattabiraman.
He added that village naattamai ostracized these families in violation of the Constitution, barring them from accessing local stores and other facilities as well as speaking with other residents. "If we protest against ostracism and officials' inaction, the police arrest us not Venkatesh," he said.

After launching the drive on a pilot basis on Saturday, Health Minister KG Arunraj told reporters that two doses of the vaccine, administered three months apart, would provide 80% protection against dengue.
The use of the vaccine, Qdenga, will be expanded to other parts of the country after assessing its efficacy in Kadayanallur, the minister said.
Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda has manufactured the vaccine.
Arunraj added that two scientists from the Indian Council of Medical Research would study the impact of the vaccination in Kadayanallur. "If not treated properly, dengue patients may lose their lives. So far, there has been no vaccination for this disease in India. A Japan-based private firm has manufactured a single vaccine for four types of dengue fever. Forty countries have approved it, and the World Health Organisation has issued a pre-qualification certificate. Brazil has included it in its public health vaccination schedule. In India, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has approved this vaccine for administration to people aged between four and 60," the minister said.
He added that while no state in India has started using the vaccine yet, Tamil Nadu has decided to study its impact on a pilot basis.
"The findings of this study in Kadayanallur will serve as a guide for the entire nation. The extension of the dengue vaccine drive to other districts across Tamil Nadu will be announced after a team of officials submits its inspection report," Arunraj said.

On the one hand, TN govt sets a mission to send Tamil Nadu players to the Olympics. On the other, recommendations play a major role in the field. Kadayanallur DMK MLA TM Rajendran, his brother, Sub-Registrar, VAO, zonal deputy tahsildar & surveyor booked for illegally registering 9.7 acre land, under IPC 420 based on a complaint by a differently abled person
S Brinda, another player who had a chance to be appointed captain of the State team, was selected for the State team. However, she expressed her dissatisfaction with the alleged bias in the selection process via a letter to the committee and withdrew from the team. “Keerthika, two others and I, all from Kalathimadam village in Tenkasi, took part in the selection. Even though we performed well, the committee only selected me. It may be noted that the team we were all part of has won more than 100 trophies across Tamil Nadu. We have won gold medals twice in the Republic Day Sports and Games, organised by the State government, and secured third place in the CM Trophy. However, we face problems during the selection process every year,” she said.

Speaking to TNIE, J Keerthika, a kabaddi player, said that the committee rejected her in favour of another girl. “I performed well during the selection process. Since they did not have a reason to reject me, they asked me to compete with other girls once again. I scored more points in that round too. However, after receiving some phone calls and holding a secret meeting, the committee members left my name out of the selected team,” she added.
