BITCOIN CORE DEV WARNS RELYING ON AI TO FIND BUGS BEFORE ATTACKERS IS NOT A SUSTAINABLE SECURITY STRATEGY

Bitcoin Core developer Niklas Gögge warns the recent wave of AI-driven vulnerability scanning is exposing a fundamental shift in Bitcoin security.

LLMs have dramatically lowered the cost of finding vulnerabilities, potentially allowing attackers to uncover catastrophic bugs for hundreds of dollars in compute.

The response has been massive. More than 1,000 reports have been generated against Bitcoin Core alone through efforts including Project Loupe, the Bitcoin Red Team and individual contributors.

So far, Gögge says those scans have found no high or critical-severity vulnerabilities in Bitcoin Core.

But he warns relying on better models to find bugs before attackers do isn’t a sustainable security strategy.

Instead, developers need to “get ahead of the LLMs” through exhaustive automated testing, fuzzing and property-based testing.

Bitcoin Core has already accumulated more than a century of CPU time fuzzing critical components and decades more simulating networks of Bitcoin nodes.

His argument is to use AI not just to discover vulnerabilities, but to build testing infrastructure that prevents entire classes of vulnerabilities before the next generation of models arrives.
