Not a day goes by that I am not reminded of a famous study where men and women were forced to play a card game against an opponent.

A few days ago I jokingly said I was more conservative than @KemiBadenoch

Except I wasn’t really joking.

Core to what *was* British conservatism, as a world view (it’s now essentially dead), is that things can always get worse.

In fact they often do, and to stop that - or even take things in a slightly better direction - requires real thought and care. To make things marginally better is an obligation, but also tremendously hard - and always the work of multiple generations over time. And you still need luck.

I had to reconcile that with thinking Marx had the best understanding about the volatility and permanently revolutionising nature of capitalism - but actually one is more comfortable with the other than at first glance. “All that is solid melts into air…all that is holy is profane” is a powerful analysis, and can be adopted by anyone, from socialist revolutionaries to social conservatives. Indeed it has been.

But back to British conservatism.

It no longer exists. It’s dead. That’s most visible with the permanently utopian schemes - via war - cheered on by the Tories and Reform. Rather than thinking things tend to get worse - that this is a default - they think things CAN’T get worse, certainly abroad. That things can only get better. There’s a place for that, certainly - optimism is important - but as the default thinking regarding foreign policy it’s insane, and we’ve been paying the price for decades. We will for many more.

The only powerful faction in global affairs now interested in hard work, getting rich, global stability and progress is, ironically, the Chinese communist party.

The British right has very few conservatives now. Certainly not intellectually. It’s just liberals who cheer on war and, often, dislike muslims.

Some acts place a person beyond the reach of ordinary moral consideration. A 23-year-old man who rapes a 12-year-old girl for over an hour has done something that most people, if they are honest, struggle to categorise as human behaviour. Whatever we call what remains after such an act - creature, monster, the inadequate word "offender" - it is not a fellow citizen deserving of the protections we extend to one another.

This is not an abstract position. Reading about this Afghan asylum seeker convicted of this crime in Britain produces something closer to physical revulsion than intellectual disagreement. As a parent, as someone who lives here, the violation feels personal. The anger is visceral, and I suspect it is widely shared.

The question that follows is what a state should do with such knowledge. My answer has become simple: this man has forfeited his human rights. He deserves neither compassion nor mercy from the British state. If we had the death penalty, I would support its application here - though even that feels inadequate. Death would be quick. What he did to that child was not.

The broader failure is that he was here at all. A fighting-age male from Afghanistan, wandering the country unaccounted for, exploiting the kindness that British people extend to those claiming refuge. We have allowed this to continue for too long, and the cost is measured in destroyed lives.

I support the Conservative policy of leaving the European Convention on Human Rights and repealing the Human Rights Act, with whatever arrangements are necessary to preserve peace in Northern Ireland. Beyond that, the policy should be straightforward: no asylum applications processed on British soil, and automatic deportation of foreign criminals even to countries with the death penalty.

In this case, I would happily return this man to Afghanistan with an expertly translated file detailing his conviction, handed to whoever among the Taliban handles such matters. What happens next is not my concern. He will likely be executed. I do not care.

Some will find this position monstrous. But the real monstrosity has already occurred, in Essex, to a child who will carry what happened for the rest of her life. The question is not whether we can afford to be harsh. It is whether we can afford to keep pretending that universal compassion costs nothing.

I would go further. Unless someone can demonstrate, with verifiable evidence, that they are a political dissident fleeing genuine persecution - someone like Jimmy Lai - I see no reason to grant asylum at all. Suspend applications from the developing world entirely. Yes, this means some genuine refugees will be turned away. That is a cost I am willing to accept.

When the final calculation is made, the wellbeing of one British person outweighs the wellbeing of a million people from anywhere else in the world. This is not a comfortable thing to say. But comfort is a luxury we purchase with the safety of children, and the price has become too high.

The rape of Britain by foreigners must stop. I do not care what it does to our global reputation.
