Compared to others, Nietzsche seems readable on the surface. But when you slow down, wonder about the metaphors and how one paragraph is connected to the next, and take seriously his own threats about being misunderstood, the confusion starts to percolate.
"Every profound spirit needs a mask: even more, around every profound spirit a mask is growing continually, owing to the constantly false, namely shallow, interpretation of every word, every step, every sign of life he gives." Section 40 of BG&E.
Good to be back, friends. I'm working on something cool with my buddy @Aleg97Alix and a great teacher from our time at Sarah Lawrence College, Marina Vitkin.
12-week close reading of the first part of Beyond Good & Evil. Seminars and one-on-one conferences. Give our page a look!
Great philosophy promises a new way of thinking. But when something foreign appears, we tend to domesticate it by translating it into what we already know.
Aim to preserve a text’s otherness, allowing what is alien in it to unsettle and transform what we thought we understood.
Imagine opening a work of philosophy and the first word is "supposing" and the first three sentences end in question marks.
Where does that leave you as a reader?
To read a great philosophical work is to try to reconstruct its world within our own thought without collapsing the difference between them.
Doing that requires both discovering in the text the traces of its foundations and uncovering the assumptions we bring to it.
The seminar models masterful navigation in action, and your conferences are where you learn to become a navigator yourself.
Every two weeks you will meet for 50 minutes with your tutor, who has spent at least a decade studying philosophy and has been trained in our pedagogical method.
In these conferences you will focus on the movements of logic in your written responses to the text, and on your habits of thinking within the course and beyond.
