As a pet project, I have been enhancing the audio of Leo Strauss' lectures - beginning with the '66 lecture on Meno. My chief aim has been to enhance Strauss' voice and minimize background noise such tape artifacts.
On the whole, they are a significant improvement. However, some students - in particular Charles Butterworth - were not captured well on the original recording and can't be satisfactorily enhanced.

Brian Wilson as poet knew that the glaring distinction between giddy joy and lonely grief belies their common substance. This vision of the unity and fraction of human experience may have informed his invocation of Wordsworth in one of his finest songs.
May he rest in peace.
@GregMcBrayer3 Dorian as "imitating the sounds and accents" of a man being courageous makes a certain sense to me (though the accent part is confounding), but Phrygian for mild temperament and voluntary situations doesn't land for me.
I continually wonder about the "imitation of accents."
@jdjaicueje90840@jguipre I think something like this might be right: that a disordered regime features just as much nature for virtue as, and possibly more reputation for virtue than, an ordered regime, but an ordered regime would feature more matriculation of nature for virtue into being of virtue?
@jdjaicueje90840@jguipre I'm thinking about Glaucon's interest in justice in Rep. II coming in the form of a kind of anxiety about the popularity of injustice as an approach to political life. Vice threatens the destruction of virtue, at the very least prompting us to consider what we might lose....
@jdjaicueje90840@jguipre I'm not sure if this is what he's getting at, but one could imagine that a decadent or diminished political environment "provides more occasion" for virtue and its consideration. In such contexts virtue may stand out more among vicious practices and inspire by such contrast?
The beautiful moments of peace and healing in the Iliad by Hector and Patroclus, while touching, are pushing the poem and the listener/reader to the greatest act of heroism that comes at the end of the epic: Achilles' embrace of Priam and the bestowal of peace for Hector's burial
Just got these in the mail from UChicago Press.
These books have been out of print for some time, but clean copies were found and used to bring them back into print.
