💫 Uma Kumaran becomes first British Tamil minister in Foreign Office role

@Uma_Kumaran, the Labour MP for Stratford and Bow and the first person of Eelam Tamil heritage elected to the British parliament, has been appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, becoming the first British Tamil to hold ministerial office.

The appointment was confirmed on Wednesday evening as the new prime minister, Andy Burnham, set out his ministerial team. Kumaran will also serve as an Assistant Whip. The Foreign Office is the department responsible for British foreign policy, including its position at the United Nations.

Announcing the appointment, Kumaran said the news was:

"Particularly meaningful to share this news today as the first ever Minister of British Tamil heritage. Britain gave my both parents sanctuary, a chance to rebuild their lives and to flourish."

I was deeply honoured to commemorate Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day at the Tamil Genocide Monument located in Brampton, Canada.

May 2009, the state of Sri Lanka engaged in a heightened program of genocide marked by deliberate bombings in government sanctioned “no-fire zones” and denial of food and medicine to Tamil people.

I am proud that Canada continues to stand as a global leader in nationally recognizing the Tamil Genocide. Ontario made history as the first international jurisdiction to recognize the Tamil genocide through, Tamil Genocide Education Week, Act 2021. The City of Brampton serves as a land where the Tamil genocide monument stands in honour of the innocent lives lost during the height of the Tamil genocide.
