What Arab and African teams are doing at this World Cup makes me genuinely happy.

Saudi Arabia drew 1-1 with Uruguay today, which means Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay all have one point in the group. It’s completely wide open now.

This is a great result for Saudi Arabia. Just imagine: Hervé Renard was sacked only a month before the World Cup, and Georgios Donis was brought in as his replacement. He had only coached the team in three friendly games before the tournament.

Despite that, Donis set his team up brilliantly. Saudi Arabia played direct football, won plenty of duels, and showed great physical intensity — things few people expected from a coach with so little time to prepare and no previous World Cup experience.

Morocco drew with Brazil, Egypt drew with Belgium, Saudi Arabia drew with Uruguay, Côte d’Ivoire beat Ecuador, and Cape Verde held Spain to a draw.

It’s great to see Arab and African teams making such a strong start to the World Cup. 👏❤️
