@muggwhump@BBCNewsnight That’s not accurate at all, you need to exclude public health. The French spend 24% of GDP on social protection and the UK spends 16% of GDP on social protection. The main reason for this is that the French spend 15% of GDP on pensions, and the UK spends 8% of GDP on pensions.
@KnottMatthew I have enjoyed reading your coverage of this but I am not entirely sure about your reliance on the movie "Love Actually" for part of your political analysis. It's a satisfying watch but as it is a completely fictional scenario there is no way of knowing how effective it would be
@eric_lang@ingbrizio I think the point @ingbrizio was making is that the less hardcore might simply enjoy the tactile & social experience of shifting cardboard and wood around in the company of friends and not be too fussed about min-maxing and vanquishing their opponents
@VictoriaCoren There’s been a lot of attrition since the heyday of the British “funnies”. Loved them as a kid. Buster was probably my fave - recently bought a nice book about the cartoon work of Tom Paterson. Lots of great characters from “Whoopee!” too. Also don’t forget the “Dandy!”
@jonkudelka The reserve bank has thousands of staff. And a board. How can you be so naive as to blame one person for this? The RB is a regulatory body doing what it is supposed to do. Did Australians think that rates would stay at historic lows forever? There was heaps of warning.
@bernybelvedere You certainly have a point, but showing only the denouement of a show or film out of context is often going to be cringeworthy because you’re not emotionally invested
