In Russia, it feels as though the very composition of the air has changed — or, seen from the outside, as if a haze has settled in.
We are witnessing three overlapping processes. Attitudes toward Putin are shifting. Economic optimism is fading, along with the everyday patriotism tied to it — the kind that celebrates survival rather than progress. “At least we’re alive.” Finally, there is a growing recognition that the war cannot be won — a war that has itself changed, eroding Russia’s advantages.
A great turning point.
My latest piece for Carnegie Politika (@CEIP_Politika) and Meduza (@meduzaproject) on this important shift in public mood in Russia. For now in Russian — an English version will follow.

Lost in translation: How Russia’s new elite hit squad was compromised by an idiotic lapse in tradecraft
@christogrozev, @Dobrokhotov and @michaeldweiss detail how hubris and Google Translate exposed Russia's most secretive assassination unit, Center 795.

1/2. Orban's Hungary dropped from about 46-47th to 84th position in Transparency International's corruption perceptions index over the long years of his rule since 2010, fiddling the political and media systems in his favour. Lowest position in Europe.
Very important tone of the Statements made by Armenia's Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, in Tbilisi.
He underlined the importance of Georgia and Armenia's common movement towards the EU, and he stressed the need for "independent foreign policy." NONE of this corresponds to Georgia's current direction.
Pashinyan looked like a real leader, and his counterpart like a total nobody (as he is).
I've been working on this for ages in various countries: the story of the intelligence buildup to Putin's 2022 invasion. How did the US and Britain find out so much, and why were Europe and Ukraine sceptical.
It's a long one:

Important demonstration of UK support with the Defence Secretary announcing half a billion pounds of support to 🇺🇦 air defences. All the more important after last night’s Russian air strikes which left another 3000 households without heating and killed at least two people 🇺🇦🇬🇧
