How much oil and gas is REALLY left in the North Sea? 🤔
According to a new report by oil and gas lobby group @OEUK_, loads!!!!
*As long as they get subsidies and deregulation*
Is this true? And if so, would it lower bills?
Let's investigate...
The crisis for UK steel is exposing another –perhaps even bigger – crisis for UK
Our news media seems incapable of even the most basic factchecking
YES energy for UK steelmakers is costly
NO it's not due to net-zero
YES it is due to GAS
Here's what UK media isn't telling you🧵

If you're interested in energy/climate you've probably heard the nugget that "kerosene/crude oil helped save the whales", by reducing demand for whale oil in lanterns.
I've even trotted it out myself🤦♂️
But there's a problem with it. A BIG problem...
🧵
The key lesson from Clay Christensen is that for all sorts of deeper, systemic reasons, it is VERY VERY DIFFICULT for old, established businesses to compete with disruptive technologies.
By the time you're competing it's invariably too late. This is where we are NOW with cars
To understand global south anger at the COP29 climate finance goal it's crucial to understand two key numbers.
"At least" $300bn/year - developed nations agreed to "take the lead" in mobilising this for developing countries
$1.3tn/year - a wider, vaguer goal
Sounds big! But...
NEW TEXT at #COP29 confirms we won't get a decision on who hosts COP31 in 2026 until June next year, at the earliest
Seems neither Australia nor Turkey are willing to step back from their bids

Discussions on the new finance goal continued in informal informals, with negotiators noting progress on access. Discussions will continue in this format, with a view to forwarding a revised draft text to the @COP29_AZ Presidency before its stocktaking plenary at 5:00 pm #COP29
Meanwhile, you can easily find everything related to the "new collective quantified goal" on climate finance using the search box in our #COP29 text tracker
The "framework for a draft" NCQG text has 173 square brackets (indicating areas of disagreement) & 6 "options"…

Current national climate plans (NDCs) fall miles short of what’s needed to avert the crippling effects of climate change.
We need to end the era of inadequacy and spark a new age of acceleration, unlocking the vast benefits of bold climate action.

We need the #G20 to lead the way in committing to new pathways for economic development that are compatible with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and in championing reforms that will enable all countries to benefit from green growth. The final report of the @g20org TF-CLIMA Group of Experts, which I co-chair with @SongweVera, sets out clear recommendations for G20 countries to advance green industrial strategies and scale up green finance, backed by equitable global governance structures.

Finally, it's happening. The fuel duty has been frozen since 2011. It's such a long-running scandal that it doesn't even feel like a scandal.
Carbon Brief analysis: "duty freezes may have increased UK total greenhouse gas emissions by 7% since 2010."

The world is adding a huge 670 GW of new renewable capacity in 2024!
Between now & 2030, it is set to add 5,500 GW – even outperforming governments' own national targets
This is equal to the current total power capacity of China, EU, India & US combined: https://t.co/zhQRhKf9wN
Tripling renewables & doubling energy efficiency would cut emissions by 10 bln tonnes by 2030 vs current path, getting the world 2/3 of the way to a Paris-aligned energy system
New @IEA report is 1st global analysis on putting the COP28 goals into action: https://t.co/Udk361it30
The transition to net zero emissions would mean lower energy costs globally than if the world continues on its current path.
Our report shows scaling up clean technologies is key for affordability, as well as efforts to cut emissions

COP29 🇦🇿 presidency representative Rovshan Mirzayev says at #SB60 that Azerbaijan, UAE and Brazil will update their NDCs “as soon as possible, to lead by example”
Also says there are up to 10 other countries that will launch new NDCs around COP29 “before the deadline”.
