The Book of Common Prayer 1979 teaches that we should directly address the communion of saints in prayer.
See the Ash Wednesday liturgy where we confess our sins to God, to one another, and to all the saints in heaven and on earth.
“But he is a God who cares about women and childbirth, people who travel by land, by water, or by air, the crops, weather, all of this…That is because he cares about bodies and people and bread and wine and oil and water. This is the kind of God we know.”
—Rev. Can. West
The Book of Common Prayer has shaped the theological and spiritual development of ordinary English citizens, and many others, through daily worship practices for over 475 years, and serves as a potent resource for believers for three key reasons.
Firstly, the Prayer Book integrates the Bible into worship services; the Prayer Book is replete with biblical content. John Wesley aptly observed, “I believe there is no liturgy or prayer in the world... that breathes more of a solid, scriptural, rational piety than the Common Prayer of the Church of England.”
Secondly, the Prayer Book embodies theology in practice. In other words, Anglicans engage in theological reflection within the context of worship. This implies that participants are not merely memorizing liturgical forms but are also absorbing the Church's theological teachings. Cranmer intentionally structured the catechism to take shape through liturgical worship, making theological truths more tangible through actions such as kneeling or bowing before the cross while proclaiming Jesus as Lord.
Thirdly, the Prayer Book serves as the foundation for Christian formation. Cranmer sought to restore proper worship rather than discard tradition, recognizing liturgical worship as the basis for Christian formation.
When used faithfully, the Prayer Book plays a pivotal role in shaping the hearts and identities of God's people, serving as a valuable companion on their spiritual journeys, not just on Sundays but also in daily devotions and home worship.
For those who do not own a Prayer Book, acquire one!
A friend of mine launched a project for kids about the Tooth Fairy and it's pretty impressive. Go out and show some love to his project.
