When I was in 2nd Grade or so, we all took mandatory aptitude tests that were sent to Iowa for grading.

When I stumbled upon my results two years ago I was stunned by how accurate it turned out to be through my entire life.

It accurately captured my strengths and weaknesses. You could have accurately guessed my ultimate career just from these scores.

Identifying a child’s potential is really quite simple. We’ve had that down to a science for decades. We just refuse to accept there are some who are not cut out for certain things. We insist that everyone can be whatever they put their mind to, and it simply isn’t true.

Instead of rage, Martha chose radical forgiveness. She visited Lewis in prison for years, wrote letters, and advocated for his parole. In 2018, after 22 years behind bars, he was released—with Martha’s support. She even gave him a job… on the same family estate where he had killed her mother.

Then, in March 2020, Lewis stole from her, lost the job, broke back into the house, and murdered 63-year-old Martha— in the exact same room where her mother died 24 years earlier.

The Reliable White Guy ™️ is thorough, conscientious, takes his work seriously enough that it stands out compared to many of his colleagues, and often goes beyond his role. Canadians and even foreigners, will tag him if they have a serious problem that needs solving.

He knows everything there is to know about his specific role and if he doesn’t, he’ll figure it out on the spot. You all know and have seen the Reliable White Guy ™️ in everything from grocery stores, to bankers, to call centres, the telecoms kiosk.

Canadian seniors flock to him like moths to a lightbulb, as are foreigners self aware or cynical enough not to trust their own with whatever it is. Women of all ages defer to him when they’re overwhelmed. People feel relieved after the service he provides.

He does enough to keep most things running that is frequently taken for granted. He can be any age, young or old and things frequently go south when enough of them move on.

The Reliable White Guy ™️ as one of many archetypes the same way the Tech Bazaar Indian ™️ and Overachieving Asian Mathematician ™️ are, but is more of a generalist.
