If a “literal, grammatical-historical” hermeneutic requires the Christian interpreter to reverse the direction of redemptive history—moving from fulfillment back to shadow, from the new covenant back to the Mosaic covenant, or from Christ’s heavenly realities back to their provisional old-covenant forms—then that hermeneutic must be rejected as contrary to the inspired hermeneutic of Hebrews.

Hebrews 8 explicitly identifies the Mosaic order as “a copy and shadow of the heavenly things” (v. 5), Christ as the mediator of the “better covenant” established on “better promises” (v. 6), and the first covenant as rendered “obsolete” by the arrival of the new (v. 13).

The trajectory of biblical revelation is not from Christ back to Moses, from substance back to shadow, or from the new covenant back to the old. It is from shadow to substance, promise to fulfillment, and Moses to Christ.

Therefore, the problem is not grammatical-historical exegesis. The problem is grammatical-historical exegesis severed from its canonical, covenantal and Christological fulfillment.

Any hermeneutic that requires redemptive history to run backward in order to preserve its conclusions has misunderstood the direction of the Bible.
