I’m yet to fully understand the attacks on Dr Olara Otunu’s candidature by some Ugandans. I have read some, but I don’t think they’re strong enough as to justify decampaigning him. Indeed, being backed by a government that is grossly violating rights of dissenting Ugandans raises concern. However, we know that he can’t get there without the endorsement. It is a dilemma of sorts. We know though that he has never supported the human rights violations. On the contrary, when he was more active and whenever he has been asked, he has spoken against bad governance. I don’t think he is the kind of person whose principles and values the endorsement is going to change once he takes the position. I still stand by him.
