Germany's 🇩🇪 falling behind on the world stage in the last 1-2 decades has been largely caused 3 decisions made by Germany itself under 0 pressure.
1. the nuclear exit, 2. the debt brake and 3. Russian gas dependency

@kimmonismus Im usually with u on criticizing EU regulations but this is a clear positive. Text markers will always lose quality if you change the words. Its the best we have.+ a text that carries someone's ideas but is fully AI written should display the latter. Originality proves the former
anyone more into economics than i am naively believes in human rationality
anyone less into economics than i am can't do math
only i have achieved the perfect level of market-informed policy analysis
@OpenAI Id much prefer an opt/out over an opt/in for regions where it isn't yet mandatory. There are no good reasons to not have this indicator active!
@Simon__Grimm Why ditch the cordon sanitaire?
And more direct democracy instead of rep. dem coincides with more Nimby'ism, w the effect stronger the more locally its implemented (federal level is usually fine). W rising data center capex I dont see how that would be preferable over rep dem
@actsmaniac How so? The Reallohnindex increase of this quarter is below the rates of the last 2 years as shown in the graph. Nominallohnindex stagnant with slight inflation uptick. So if anything, this is a worse state than we had for the last 2 years
@lugaricano@patrickc I love this initiative, have spent the last months primarily thinking about ways for Europe to turn things around and avoid the Europe2031 scenario, it has become my passion project in a way. Will there be any way to assist with this?
An announcement: Under the leadership of Mario Draghi and @patrickc we have set up the Rhine Group: policymakers, economists, entrepreneurs and business people pushing European reforms and the Draghi agenda.

@RichardHanania to implement policy changes that benefit the young we first need to limit the political power of the old+ strengthen the political power of the young (eg lowering voting age).
More general reforms arent possible as long as those who benefit from current system hold all the power
China graduated ~ 44× as many materials science bachelors as the US in 2024, to put data to it.
It's the most drastic asymmetry of any major engineering field. Though it's neither country's top field.
(China graduates ~7-10x as many undergrad engineers per year overall)
@bertona5@itsolelehmann Judging from business implementation Germany is behind the US but not by a dramatic amount, even topping EU country comparisons. I'd guesstimate Germany's numbers to be around .7 of the US ones
ok this 2.2% stat just sent me down a rabbit hole.
a few more numbers i found:
> only 0.2% of U.S. households spend over $100 a month on AI
> only 1% of U.S. adults personally pay for Claude
> only 4% of U.S. adults use AI chatbots almost constantly
> only 6% of U.S. adults use Claude
> only 4.5% have ever had an AI agent complete a task for them
> only 8.3% of U.S. workers say AI lets them do work they couldn’t do before
we are still absurdly early
Germany puts out ONE acceptably performing model which ranks well on its own catered metric and all the situationally unaware German accs on here start acting as if it's anywhere near the frontier
@NXT4EU@crehage It's a nice start but nothing more. This is in no way anywhere near the top except for on their own metric catered to their model. The tweet hypes this up way too much, it's silly. All the best to the team though! Let's hope they actually get there
Pro Waymo, pro data center, pro nuclear, pro solar, pro train, anti zoning, pro housing has to be one of the most correct and unelectable combinations in America
@Lucas_Stockholm We have much less productive sectors of the economy. Europe has not a single proper AI model. For now that's an embarrassment. In 3 years it will be devastating for national security. Kneecapping any chance of Europe building that capacity is incredibly shortsighted
