The Mauritanian iron ore train is one of the longest and heaviest trains in the world and the most unique and incredible railway journeys one can take.

The train is up to 3 km (1.8 miles) in length, travels on a single track of 704 kilometres (437 miles), with 200 – 300 freight carriages, weighing up to a total of 84 tons.

The sole purpose of the train is to export iron ore from the mining town of Zouerate to the Port of Nouadhibou via Choum in Mauritania, Northwest Africa.

But the state agency, Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière, allows locals and tourists to board the train and use it as a mean of transportation between inland of the country and the coastline.

One cannot expect any levels of comfort one would find on other passenger trains around the world, though. This train has no ticket, no conductor, no dining cart, or any sort of announcements.

It is not bound to any timetable and may leave earlier or later than the usual departure time. This also means the arrival time is not fixed to a certain time and a single trip can take from 11 to 15 hours under the sun, at an average temperature of 40°C.

When I was climbing the mountains towards the Amarnath cave, this horse (mule?) had just died a few minutes before. By the time I went 300 meters further, they just pushed it from the edge. Game over.

When I asked a Ghodawala in the night during return journey, he casually said that 6-8 animals die daily.

Please do yatra in your foot wherever you can. Especially when you are young and healthy. I saw so many youngsters in their 20s and 30s riding a mule. Why? Yes, you can afford, but the whole purpose of a yatra is to push your body to a limit for getting a darshan in tougher terrains.

Just work on your fitness for a few months before heading to the Himalayas for yatras. Leave these poor animals for those who absolutely need them.

Why’s the expansion of the runway for the current #Pune airport so crucial for our city ??
- The current runway length is 8333 ft which means that wide bodied aircrafts which ideally need around 11000 ft cannot land in Pune.
- It’s possible to expand the runway on both sides but for that land needs to be acquired by the state govt as this is a airforce airport , and airport authority of India does not have a mandate to buy land for airports.
- Once this land is acquired, many more flights including long range international flights can land in Pune .
- This will also benefit the Air Force as larger defence aircraft’s can then land in Pune .
- The world over , civilian & airforce airports can co-exist ( ex Frankfurt)
In summary expanding the current runway is the only short term solution for Pune as a new airport is likely to take years if and when it comes . “Rarely has so little land meant so much for a city “
